plugs and wires

Going to change my plugs on my 5.4 , and figured could just as well take care of the plug wires at the same time.

Any recomendations for both that seem to be of excellent quality,
I dont know if I believe in some of these sales gimmicks out there.

thanks

Dano2,

You are in for a suprise. The Ignition system uses a COP (coil on plug) set up. The traditional wires are replaced by a plug boot that extends from the coil, mounted over the plug, to the plug. There should be no need to replace the boot unless damaged.

Your right, I was just out digging around, and to my surprise,
it all looks pretty complicated to me, I dont think I will mess with it.
I've only had the truck a few days, and its my forst Ford, so it'll take me awhile to get familier with some of the differences, and some of this new vehicle stuff, I probably will NEVER get familier with.
I was digging around underneath too, and couldn't find any zirks, except 2 on this smaller arm,.
Looks like its time to get a service manuel.
I bought my last truck new so always brought it in while under warrenty. Truck before that was older, so it was easy to work on.

WOW, they have made things complicated.
thanks

Spark Plugs?

I have about 60,000 on my '01 5.4 and would like to change the plugs but there aren't any shops, Advance, Autozone, Pep Boys, or O'Reillys, that carry the Autolike AWSF-22W that is referenced in my owners manual. I would prefer to use the OEM. Any suggestions?

What are the best acceptable substitute plugs? Thanks,

Have them order them? Get them from a Dealer? Use and other Brand? NGKs work fine. Stay away from Bosh +4 platinum plugs. I am using Denso Iriduims but that is just me.

I appreciate all the help! I called another supplier and still haven't found the plug I am looking for, but all the shops are quoting a Motorcraft plug for 'flex fuels' with a slightly different part number. I don't have any clue what they are talking about. We don't have any fuel substitutes here in S Texas. Thanks,

1999 F150 5.4L Spark Plug

I have a good picture of the original and ford-suggested replacement spark plugs, but couldn't figure out how to post it here. There is a significant difference in the number of threads on the plug. I just replaced mine today, and it wasn't as bad as it appeared at first.

I would not bother to index the plugs. The power gain is minimal compared to the loss of thread contact because of the spacer. I am using NGKs in mine.

If you are going to spray you should tighten the gap.
