Unhappy high idle, smoke at start up

99 F-150 4.6L 4x4 (doesn't really matter but oh well) about 3-4 months ago I started my truck and noticed an awful lot of smoke, thought nothing of it at first but then it came back. I have also noticed that in park my idle is at about 900rpms and in drive about 750rpms. Really started to bother me so I took it to the Ford dealer and they said my idle control was bad. I bought a new one, installed it and nothing. I called the local service manager of the Ford store and he said try change the mass air flow sensor, did it. Nothing!!! So I am out about $250.00 and nothing is fixed. I am using about a quart of oil a week and don't know what is wrong. Ford said bring it in and they will hook it up to the computer for about $170.00. That would be fine if they hadn't already squezzed me for $250.00. Oh the truck has about 102,000 miles on it. I have a flow master, K&N filter charger system, throttle body spacer and Hypertech reprogrammer. Any ideas. Sorry so long.

I am having the same problem w/ my '01 SCrew Lariat. At start up there is a lot of white smoke for about 2 minutes, then the smoke stops but it still idles pretty high, right around 900-1000 rpms. I just hit 117,000 miles and have only had the car since April 23rd, bought from a man in Louisiana who wont return my calls for maintenence reports. I noticed that problem at the test drive, but he said it hadn't been driven for about a week so i just assumed that it was a slight problem. But after a few days of regular driving it is still doing it. The truck passed an inspection test where of course, they do test the emission but i am not sure if the problem 4.6lpwnage talked about would affect it passing or failing the ispection. Mine passes. . . How much would it cost to get that part that you were talking about 4.6lpwnage ? And how hard would it be to install it myself. I want the factory part straight from ford, not an aftermarket product. Thanks for the time.

I checked my pcv valve and sure enough it was stuck. Pull the pcv valve and check to see if it is rattling inside. It is located on the passenger side of engine on valve cover. If that is your problem you will notice your idle drop as soon as you pull it out. Shake it a couple of times and see if it starts to rattle, if so put it back in and have a great day.

By the way thanks for the help it was useful.
