2000 5.4 intake query

Hi Guys. I am fitting what was sold to me as a 2000 5.4 - from a 4x4 F150 - into a Cobra replica sports car. The motor appears in good condition and I am cleaning it up at present. I have removed the intakes but have found that at the back of the right hand intake on the head, there is an intake hole half uncovered when the top is assembled. It appears that the intake manifold does not fully cover the holes in the head at the back in this one point.

Does anyone know of this? Is it normal? I am unsure yet what this is and am researching it but clearly my engine knowledge is at the amateur level so far (learning fast here!) and would appreciate assistance.

Thanks
Pete

HI!... It's nothing, don't worry about it. See both the left and right heads are identical, but in order to say put the D/S head on the P/S you have to rotate it 180 degrees. You will see the same chunck of casting that is at the rear of the P/S is covered at the front of the D/S. The heads are universal. That section of casting is used for the thermostat housing on the intake manifold on the D/S. It has NO purpose on the P.S.

Your talking about this casting, right? (One on left head)

You can see it in this pic :

Head items on 5.4

Thanks guys, and Neal, I did need to know it was not an issue. It appears odd that a hole in the head would exist there with no purpose. Does it go nowhere? It appears to go nowhere... but the area of the motor around it was clean whilst the right hand head on the same side was oily dirty and the left hand head was dry and oil-free dirty.... that appeared to be indicative of a problem (but I can't see what that problem may be).

Neal, I liked the many photos of your 5.4 engine rebuild on your part of the site. That is helping me in my clean up of my engine and in putting it back together properly. Many thanks. I have a question about the bottom unreferenced pictures. Are these of a replacement intake and plenum? If so, please pass more info. I am on email at pdore@optusnet.com.au and would welcome the help in sorting out my 5.4. Straight out of an F150 to my Cobra........

Cheers
Pete
