i cannot find my spark plugs and wires
I am trying to pull a plug so I can see if they need to be changed or not, I just traded my 4.2 f-150 and got a 00 4.6 Expedition, and for the life of me I can not find the plugs and wires, I even went underneath it and couldnt see anything, do anyone have and pics or can you please explain where they are located.
Thanks
Thanks
There right on top of the motor....you have to look real close, the plugs sit about 3'' down inside the engine. Find the coil packs and just follow the wires. Hope this helps

You have a coil on plug setup, no wires. Threre are eight coils over the eight plugs that have to be removed to pull the plugs.
There are many threads on here about changing plugs, I suggest you do a search and read them. It could be tricky to change plugs and there have been alot of concern with plug blowouts if they are not installed properly.
Not to scare you, but this site will inform you alot about the procedure.
Good luck

good luck changing the plugs--its a job and a half. The back one on the passenger side close to the firewall is a bit*h. I suggest taking it to a dealer especially since you have the coil on plug motor.
You have plugs.
The coil packs are on top of the plugs. You need to remove teh coil packs in order to get to the spark plugs. You will also need a good set of sockets and extensions and a wobble joint would be a good idea as well.

As Johngs mentioned, the plugs are under the coil packs. If you look at the top of either side of your engine, you'll see 4 round coils and 4 injectors on each cylinder head. The coils are held in place by one 7mm bolt, if you remove the bolt and disconnect the wire plug to the coil, you can plug the coil out. Inside that hole is where the spark plug is located. It is a chore to replace the rearmost plugs.

Don't take it to somewhere to have the plugs done. It will cost you big time. I know Ford wants around $250 to change them. It is a real PITA to change them but as long as you have the right tools and about 2-4 hours of time do it yourself. The Hanes manual is only $16 bucks and they describe everything pretty well. The 7 mm bolt that holds the coil pack in are the hardest part about this. The two that are the hardest to remove is the one on the driver side under the fuel rail solenoid (think that is what it is) third back from the front and the last one from the front on the passenger side. These two are the ones that eat up most of your time. If you do plan on doing it yourself get a 7mm swiveled socket not a swivel and a socket Sears has them. For the plugs get a few short extensions or Snap On makes a socket that is for removing our plugs. It is about 6" long and $50. I use the extensions. So
$50 socket for plugs
$8 for 7mm
$16 manual
$2 +/- X 8 for plugs
2-4 hours of your time = nowhere near what it will cost to have it done.

after the coils and the fuel rail were out, i changed mine with 1 plug socket, 1 8" ext. , and 1 2" ext.. oh yeah, and a rachet
i didnt find it too terribly difficult, although im used to working in tight quarters and not being able to see my hands..(damn french airplane builders!!!)
passenger side was slightly more difficult because the plugs angle back towards the firewall, not away from it.

when i took my 98 4.6 in for plugs/serpentine belt/upper intake cleaning, it cost me around $350 for everything, parts included. If youve got the knowledge/time and pateince/tools, go for it. Its not impossible, i would have done it myself, i just didnt want to screw up and drop any dirt/fine material down into the cylinder after i pulled a plug, nor did i want to mess up and cross thread, or not tighten a plug well enough and have it strip a head. If any of that happened, i wanted it to be on Ford's a$$.
