any 200k+ miles on 5.4 motors?

anyone close or over 200,000 miles on the 5.4 powered truck? i see lots of 4.6's with over 200k but not many 5.4s. I guess its because most trucks have the 4.6.

me too

i'm curious about any 5.4L's with over 200k miles on them and any problems they've encountered. i'm looking at getting a 1998 F250 4X4 w/ 5.4L and it has 266k miles on it, and i was curious how much longer i can expect the motor to last til i have to either replace or rebuild. thanks

IMO, any of these engines can go 200k+ as long as regular maintenence is kept up with.

I just bought a 1998 5.4L with 96k on the clock, runs like new. I test drove a 1999 5.4L with 165k on it, it ran well too, decided against it for other reasons. If scheduled maintenance is done and the engine isn't tortured 24x7 (occaisional torture is OK) most modern engines will hold up for 200k before needing a rebuild.

I'd assess the condition of the truck before worrying about the odometer. No smoke, starts quick, idles smooth, no unusual sounds from idle to redline, fluids clean and filled properly, no leaks, etc. If it's at a dealer with a service department ask 'em to do a compression test while you watch if you're worried. If they want to sell a truck they should agree to do it.

When you go look at a 5.4 to test drive make sure the engine is cold when you start it. What I mean is beware if the engine is warm because the owner has had it running before you got there. My 5.4 started what I think is piston slap at 93,000 miles and it's gotten much worse now with 112,000 miles. The noise is gone after the truck is warmed up. I bought it with 83,000 miles and it was quiet as a mouse for 10,000 miles. I did not know the maintenance history when I bought it. I'm not sure mine can last up to 150,000 before a piston skirt lets go.

280000 on 97 f 150

i have an 1997 f150 xlt w/ 5" fabtech lift, 35" tires, hooker headers, dual exhaust, chipped and the only thing besides regular maintenance i have done is a new trans after 2 years of pulling a 10,000 lb. trailer and removed cats for an offroad pipe after they plugged up.Definitely a reliable truck.

uncle has a 2000 Expedition with 5.4L 195K miles and adding he drives everywhere not flys so he puts alot of miles on it. he's got some after market mods from K&N and super chips computers. but he keeps his well maintained has used synthetic since he bought it brand new. and only thing he had a problem with was the ignition coil packs for the spark plugs. and those failed cause he was cleaning his engine and didnt know not to spray down that area.... cause of rust and corrosion. but yeh Ford's are built to last. even longer then most imports :-p cause u never see anyone rebuild the engine on a import do ya? no because u cant they arent made to last that long just 250K miles.

Interesting about imports..... my Toyota straight six did 300,000 in 6 years, hard work, for just a couple of seals in the transfer box and a rear diff. Did a lot of hard off-road in the desert. At 490,000, we finally lifted the head and put on a new gasket...... ah... those Tojos. just unstoppable!

My current EFI Range Rover is 17 years old, a mere 300,000 miles and the little 3.5 V8 has only had the head gaskets done a couple of years ago. It is always pulling a 2.5 tonne boat around and out of launch ramps. The electrics on the Rangie suck, but the motor is fine.

I hope my 5.4 going into the Cobra replica will be as reliable, and I honestly think it will be as it appears very well engineered and not over-complex.

My point here really is - do your maintenance, keep it clean, and don't push the cr@p out of it, and it will look after you back!

Hang loose....
Pete.

Talking miles

I have a buddy that has 1997 F150 4x4 with the 5.4 and he just turned
214,000 miles and that thing just purrs like it only has 14,000 miles on it These motors are just the best........I also have a 97'' F150 4x4 with the 5.4 and I have 136,000 miles and mines runs perfect The only things I have ever done to it was replace inner/outer tie rod ends, ball joints, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and you know the regular maintenance to take care of a truck. I love my Ford and wouldent trade it for anything.......mabe.....a new SD Stroke
