Question Help with 2000 F150 Power Steering Leak

After changing the engine oil today, I noticed that the lower power steering hose on my truck (2000 F150 Extended Cab, 5.4, (L) series VIN, 58,000 miles) had evidence of what I would call a lot of leakage. It ran several inches on the hose and got the area near the pump and engine oil filter area stained with fluid. This was not the case when I replaced my serpentine belt in November 2003. The fluid has also moved down from the "full" level to the "Minimum" level on the reservoir.

After reading all I could find on this issue I am wondering should I go ahead and replace the pump as well as the hose(s) and add a filter? Yes, the pump is noisy, but has always been that way. The 18mm nut joining the hose to the pump is as tight as it can get, however the metal part of the hose that goes into it can be moved back and forth, up and down freely.

If so, could someone please guide me through the replacement process? I *think* I will have to remove my radiator and shroud to get to the area where the hose goes into the steering box. The dealership isn't an option since I've been unemployed for almost a year now...

Thanks for any help.

I would clean it real good with brake parts cleaner. ( dosen't leave residue) , fill it up and check it better to find the exact spot and volume of the leak. Being on a budget I would not think you want to do more than necessary. If it iw a leak at the pressure side fitting, you might try disconnecting it from the back of the pump, replacing the o ring on the nose of the fitting and putting it back together. There is some movement at the fitting normally. good luck !!

I just replaced the steering pump on my 1999. I had a leaky front seal, so the pump was wet and dirty behind the pulley. It was an adventure to replace the pump!

I bought a replacement pump from Napa. The high pressure Teflon gasket from Napa was too big. I had to buy the right one at the local Ford dealer for less than two bucks. I don’t know why, but getting the pulley onto the new pump was a royal pain in the A$$. I used the pull on kit supplied with the pump, but kept shearing or stripping the grade 8.8 bolts or nuts. I eventually got the pulley to within a quarter inch of being flush. I installed the pump, but the belt alignment was off. I took pulley and pump back to the Napa dealer and they tried to finish the install using the usual pulley tool. They couldn’t budge it and they finally used an air compressor pulley tool to get pulley on the pump. It took over a day and half to get the pulley removed and reinstalled on the new pump.

I installed electric fans, so getting to the steering box was easy; I just reached over the radiator and fans. I think you would have to loosen the shroud and lift it up out of the way, but you wouldn’t have to remove the radiator.

Once the pulley was installed on the pump and I had the right gasket, it was a simple R&R.

Good luck. Dave

I had to replace hi pressure hose on mine just one month ago, as was said in last post, the pump end of the hose does swivel and as far as I could tell there's no way repair it. Bought the new hose and replaced it, besure the teflon gasket on the threaded pump end is correct and 18mm "Line Wrench" will make getting the pump end of hose tight alot easier, being that close to the pulley.

Good Luck

Thanks for the help guys! Finally got it done today. What a mess! Leaking at bottom hose and at front seal. Nice and new now, hope it makes it for at least another 58,000.

I bought a new hose and it had a paper with it the the hose is designed like that and do not tighten over 10 pounds or you will wreck it I changed mine and still leaks someone had changed the hose before me and I think they over righted it so I am going to buy a rebuilt pump and new hose to see if it will fix the problem
