Angry Blue Smoke

I started my truck the other day and noticed a fair size puff of blue smoke come from the tail pipe, after sitting for the night. This is the first time I have seen this. Today the same thing. My truck only has 4200 miles on it! Does this mean the rings didn't get seated properly? When I bought it, I had to drive it 90+ miles to bring it home. I varied my speed from 50 to 70 mph on my trip. It had only 46km on the odometer. So does this mean my rings are pooched? Back to fight with the dealership?

Buckshot, I too have the same problem (2000 with 4.6) Three different dealerships gave me 3 different lines.Wait until its broken in, probably carbon stop babying it or my favorite was,use only Fords oil and fiter. I now have 31000 Km, use their oil and filter, drive on the highways at 120 clicks and she still does it once in a while. Kind of embarasing when one neighbor has a Dodge and the other a GMC.

Well I took it to Ford and they asked that I bring it back and leave it overnight. So with the mgr and maint foreman we can start it up cold to have a better look. Oddly enough there is no black in the tail pipe. One guy suggested that there maybe a surplus of fuel in the cylinder prior to igintion. I still think its oil. One of the down sides is that the truck came off the line in Nov 02 and only had 000046Km on it when I bought it in Oct 03. Eleven months sitting on the lot. Ouch, I wonder if the rings started to rust and now with the warmer weather you can see the burnt oil. Although there were some really nice days in Oct after I had it home, where I never noticed the puff after starting it. I'll post after the shop gets a look at it next week hopefully.

do a search on this board for "blue smoke" it is a fairly common problem and is not really a problem unless it happens every day.

short trips and turning it off before the oil heats all the way up will usually cause the puff in the am. it is a little blow by and happens to all manufactures. not just ford.

make sure your PCV valve is properly seated and not clogged.

Pray to God that it is blue and not white. I parked my truck (1997 F150) the other night and didnt get back in it for 3 days. The thing wouldnt start. Finally it did start after charging the battery and it was blowing out white smoke, only to find out the head was blown. Funny thing is that it never ran hot and had water in the cheap overflow. I hate that they dont have a radiator cap to check.

Well at the dealership this AM and no puff! Actually, I've only seen it happen three times and I have been watching very carefully. They said to keep an eye on it and bring it in every time it happens so they can track it. My oil level is good and the tailpipe is clean.
