Just to confuse you a little more, the Windsor engines are a bit stouter then the Romeo engines. Generally speaking the Windsor engine has a little heavier rod and a heavy duty oil pump. It also has floating wrist pins. The Windsor engines were used in the F-150’s and the Romeo engines mostly in Mustangs.

There have been many posts that some of the Romeo engines were also used in the F-150’s. I’m not sure if any got into the F-150’s with tow packages. All 97-98 and some 99 4.6 engines had duel coils with plug wires. In 99 they were upgraded to coil on plug and the PI heads soon followed. As you all know the 8 indicates it is build in Windsor and the W indicates Romeo (go figure).

BTW all modular engines are Triton engines. That covers all truck V-8’s from 1997 on.
As far as I know, the V-6 is not a Triton block.

Our 97 Lariat is a Romeo and so was our 2001, both 4.6Ltrs. Plus, there were some Windsor engines placed into SN-95 Mustangs.

The PI heads on the 4.6l Engine didn't come out till 01. Some late modle 00's might have the PI heads. Mine was an early model and it does not have the PI heads. Doesn't really matter though as a non-PI head w/ cams will have better intake flow than a PI head w/ similar lift.

The main variences you might have in a 4.6l of the same year is it might be romeo or windsor. You can tell that by a VIN number. I believe 97s will have a Romeo block though.

I believe 99 the engines went to COP. 00' Definately has them as my engine's got them. I wouldn't worry about if you do or don't have COP though. It won't hinder your performance.
