Post Reliability and Extended Warranties

I wanted to get an opinion on a Extended Warranty. I am looking at a 6 Year / 60,000 mile Ford Extra Care plan that
basically covers almost everything. IT runs around $1400.

Questions:

How reliable are the F150's (pre-2004 models)
What is the likelihood of a major repair (above the cost of the Extended Warranty)
Has anyone had major repairs
100k comes around fast, is it worth the money.

Bottom line, would you spend $1400 to get this warranty.

Thanks!

I would not get that warranty. Instead I would opt for a 6/100k powertrain only warranty and only from Ford.

These trucks are pretty reliable and the body's and interior hold up pretty well. the big buck repairs are almost always powertrain related. IE: Transmision, leaky heads, PS, blown spark plug, etc..

there you now have my .02 for free!!

The best Ford ext service plan I could get on my 2003 FX4 was 6 years / 75000 miles, bumper/bumper. I think it was around 1500.00. If you are going to keep the truck that long then I feel they are always worth the money.

Yeah you should be able to get a good warranty from ford for less than a grand if you give them a little grind....

I went down stairs to check my contract. I got the 7 year 75000 miles for 1350.00. Seems the 100,000 miles are only on the short year terms. So the guy who has 100K 5 Year at 1100 is right. But I wanted more time and I drive less so the 7 years at 75K worked out for me. So take a hard look at how long you will own this truck and how many miles you really do drive. Not how many miles you think you might drive in the new truck, but how many miles you drove last year. Good luck with it

I would get the "Premium Care" ESP. More covered parts.
It's not the powertrain that is a potential for repairs, but the A/C systems and all the electronic stuff.
If you don't use the plan, the money will be refunded.

I agree with Homeskillet.

I got the Premium Care ESP 6 year 75,000 for $989.00.

Think about it, a bad ac compressor and labor for the install can cost that much.
True the powertrain componants are the high dollar parts, But some of the smaller stuff can add up really high and fast.

Esp

You need to know that they have their limitations, but understanding that, esp is a good thing. I do all the call in for approval at my dealer and you need to keep up with records of oil changes, trans fluid changes and understand also that modifications can have an effect on some repairs where inspectors are involved. Premium Care (Ford) is the best and also the most expensive policy.

Thats what I got ...the premium care ESP for 5yr/100K...my payments are 5 years...right now my truck is 9 months old and I have 12800 miles on it...now I may trade after 3 years and if I'm under and I trade it in I can increase my trade in value by making sure they pay for the remaining miles/yrs on the warrenty...It is transferrable

When I bought my 01 Scab I got the 6year/60k ext warranty although it wasn't from Ford. (Will not make that mistake again.) Now I am selling/trading my truck with only 32k miles on it for an 04. I paid $1500 for the ext warranty on my current truck. Yeah I know I got screwed. Anyway, you have choices with extended warranty. You can get a prorated refund if you choice. Right now mine is worth $700. That's less than half what I paid and I am still under the factory warranty. You can also tranfer the warranty if you sell the truck to an individual. If your not sure you going to go over the basic warranty before selling/tradin I would recommend holding off. If you have a bunch of problems your probably going to get rid of it anyway. If you don't you my decide you don't need it. You can always add it later as long as you don't pass 36/36,000. They say that the prices are cheaper if you get it when you buy the truck, but I don't think its much different.

I got an extended warranty (7 yrs/100K) through my credit union for around $700. It covers everything the Ford plan does and I also checked with my dealership and some other auto shops to double check. The best part is that the cost is added to the end of my loan. I think I ended up with 2 extra payments. The kicker is that if I have no claims against the extended warranty, there is no cost. This way I'm covered if something happens and don't have the added cost if it doesn't.

Under NO circumstances I would get an aftermarket warranty plan.
Thousands of people got stuck out when one of the major warrant companies went belly up.

We had a Mustang at work with spun main bearings. The aftermarket warraty company denied the claim because the cust had 20" wheels.

I had a truck last week that needed a DPFE sensor, the after market warr. does not pay diag, the cust had a $100 deduct.
In the end the warranty company was responsible for $6.95 of the repair.
I could write a book on this stuff.
