Question Gas milage and air intake???

I recentley bought a new air intake for my 1998 F150 4X4 4.6l off of ebay. I was getting pretty good gas milage but I thought an air intake was supposed to help gas milage. If you keep off the gas will it help or does it actually hurt??? I'm a little confused.

I didn't notice any mileage increase with my K&N intake. The horsepower was immediately noticeable, more so than when I re-chipped her. The only thing that has made a difference in gas mileage was the addition of my hard tonneau and I did that just so my junk would stay in the bed. Kind of a win win situation.
