4.6L Windsor/Romeo
4.6L Windsor/Romeo
I'm building a new engine for my truck. Gonna order all new bottom end, block, forged parts, new PI heads, etc.
What I'm wanting to know is it better to build the Windsor or Romeo block?
Reason I'm asking is I haven't heard there is a big difference between them and for some reason the heads for a Romeo engine have a cheaper list price. Can anyone help?
Thank You.

Check the archives. there is a link to a site that details the differences between the romeo and windsor engines and all of the variations in each.
From what I recall is that the Windsor engine was built for the E-150 and F-150 and the Romeo engine was built for the Musttang, Crown Vic and Grand Marquis. Due to the overall popularity of the engine they have pulled the Romeo engine into the 150.
Some on the website prefer the Romeo over the Windsor, but I do not know why.
I have a '97 Scab 4x2 with the 4.6 Windsor and 3.55LS rear diff. I have 67,000 miles without any problems.

Found this in my own search. It shows the 4.6 history.

The difference in the blocks is in the way the main caps are held on. Rep engines use jack screws on the sides of the main bearing caps. WEP uses side mounted Main cap bolts. The REP crank flange has 6 bolts and the WEP has 8. WEP pistons pins are floating. Piston pins on the REP pistons are fixed and the Con rods are smaller.

Heads are different too. The number of cam cover bolts is different on both engines. 11 for REP and 13or 14 for WEP.
The WEP used cam caps and the REP uses Girdles. The cam gears on the WEP are pressed on and the REP are bolted on.
