4.6l engine removal

hey

i have a 99 f150 std cab short box 4x4 with the 4.6l. i am having the infamous head leaking issue and my luck it is leaking way worse they "it should" most only seep from the head but mine likes to leak alot. so beacasue i got bent by ford and its not there problem that they made a defect i am considering replacing the gasket myself. has anyone removed the head on one of these yet? do you have to lift the cab (ive heard) so you can get the intake off???? now i have a 3 inch body lift if you have to lift the cab is the 3" lift enough clearance or is in easier just to pull the engine. any suggestions will be a big help thanks

Lifting the cab is done only to make working on the head easier. It is not necessary to remove it to gain any clearance. With a 3 inch body lift you should have more than enough "room" to make it easier. The only thing is; you are going to have a sore back from leaning over the fender.

you can maybe jockey it into a better working position by removing the wheels/tires.

i just pulled my 5.4 out of my 99 for the leaking head gasket. i also have a 3" body and was able to pull half the engine apart before i pulled the engine. i pulled it because the front cover has to come off to get to the timing chains to be able to remove the sohc. and my tranny was acting up. pulling the engine was simple and saved my back as i had to sit in the engine bay. feel free to ask questions hope that helps you.
