Overfilled Oil

My daughter just bought a 2002 KIA Sportage 4x4 (Don't laugh). Her idiot boyfriend changed the oil and filter on in and put 5 quarts in it. It requires 4.4 quarts,It measure about 3/4 of a inch above the full mark.Is this going to hurt anything?
I know on my 98 4.6w it takes 6.5 quarts to bring it to full on the dipstick without any problems. She has about 67k left on the warranty and I don't want her to have any problems with the warranty.. Thanks in advance

Simple...Just drain some of the oil out, then top it off to the 'full' mark on the stick. Or maybe have the boyfriend do it. On that engine, I don't know if .6qt is enough to have the crank start to splash the oil or not. If it were mine, I'd take some out.

What would the "crank splashing the oil " do ?
I know draining some of the oil out would be the logical solution , but she's 200 miles away by now and I found out after she left.

Drain oil out or just replace the filter ..

A new filter would bring down to about right.

The way I understand it...If there's too much oil in the pan, the crankshaft could splash the oil up and out of the way of the oil pickup, thus lowering the oil pressure because some of the oil in the pan is actually airborne. This is more or less the way a non-pressure oiling system works. In a flathead engine, such as a lawnmower, or a Model T ford...where everything that needs lubrication is inclosed within the crankcase..this works great.
I really don't think that a half a quart is too much reason for concern, but I'm not familar with Korean engines. Canyonslicker's solution is probably the best...just drain the filter.

I have heard of an incident with the miata engine and 1 quart too much oil in it. As the crank hit the oil, it caused the oil to foam. After a few miles, all the oil was turned to foam, causing oil pressure to drop to nearly nothing. I don't think a half a quart would be a problem, but removing a little wouldn't hurt.

Lou, you might not want to add that extra half quart in yours too. It only takes 6 quarts and as long as it is in the don't add area of the dip stick you don't need to add more. I doubt if the extra half quart will hurt anything, but why put in oil you don't need. Save some money.

Lou, have her pull the dipstick and check for air bubbles. If the crank hits the oil causing it to foam then she will see the air bubbles. If there are no bubbles it's fine, don't worry, if there are bubbles it should be drained and topped off.
