Coils!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 Supercrew XLT with the 5.4L. I bought it brand new as a hold over near the end on 2001. It now has 25K miles. Since I've had it, it has been to the dealer 5 times for bad coils. Sometimes the check engine light comes on, sometimes not. I use my truck as a truck and haul stuff all the time. I also use it to pull my boat. Is there something I don't know about these cois? Is there some type of maintaince I need to do? I love the truck and other than these coils going out I've had no problems. My warranty is up in Nov. this year and a $120.00 for a coil, I don't want to be replacing one on an average of every 5K miles. Should I trade for a 2004 model? Do they have the same coil problems?

Is it always the same coil (one of the back two on the passenger side)? If so there is the issue of the heater hose leaking and dripping on top of them causing failure! I've never had one fail in three years.

Also for out of warranty replacement, Auto Zone or NAPA sales them for about $48 and are a snap to replace, 10 minute job.

One other thing, do you wash the engine compartment. The rubber boots on the bottom of the coils that seal over the plugs are ok for keeping condensation out, but not high pressure washing. Once water gets into that plug well it could short the plug and cause the coil to fail. Just a thought!

Of the 5 times it has been the same coil twice. The service guy at the dealer talks like this is a common problem. I have never washer under the hood. Thanks for info about the Autozone coils. I about died when the dealer told me it was a $120.00 part.

1 thru 6 are no problem, number 7 and 8 can only be accomplished after the right conbination of cus words has been either screened at the top of your lungs or whispered under you breath.
i will try next time but number 7 would be easier if you took a 7 mm socket and grinded it down so that it is only about 1/8 to 3/16" deep.
