Please help
Hello My 4.2 is going south. I owe $10,000 on it. It has 150,000 miles with no previous problems. It has water in the oil. No chance to sell and get another. Have to fix.
1)Should I fix it and wait untill it goes again?
2) Get a 4.6 engine complete with computer and all?
3) Crash truck into tree hope for the best?
What choices do I have
#2 Can it be done easily

Can't trade they won't do it Tried that route.
A 4.2 ford tuck is almost impossible to find an engine for less than $3000.00 IMO Looked briefly. As I said I will have to keep truck for a while-got to do soething!!!

Rings, new bearings and full gasget set will be easier than dropping in a 4.6L, and significanly cheaper I would think. If it is like all Fords I've worked on, there is probably very little engine wear, but until it's torn apart, no one would know for sure.
Good luck in which ever road you take.

If your 4.2 is not making noise you probably just need a gasket or a head and an oil change $1000
$2000 for a light rebuild
a 4.6 may be $1200 but you'll need headers,a wiring harness,
probably a bigger batt., eng. mounts, y pipe , starter, fan, may be a rad and hoses, computer, thottle cable maybe not all these things but as you can see there's a few things to check out.

You are in a bad situation.
I won't ask why you owe $10,000 on a $4,000 truck.
Your best bet is to find the cheapest way to repair the engine and ride it out.
If you just give up on the truck and let them take it, you will be liable for the difference between the 10K and what they get as is, which won't be much.
The reason they won't trade with you is your negative equity is way too much. If someone owes 6k on a 4k vehicle they will roll the negative 2k into the new vehicle.
As is, your negative is closer to 7 or 8k. That is too much to roll onto the top of a new vehicle price.
You are pretty much stuck fixing it and continuing to buy it.
The cheapest way out is to repair the engine you have.
Someday when you are old, you will look back on this and laugh.

if you are going to keep the truck your only viable option is to fix it, or install a rebuilt 4.2. the 4.6 route is too expensive.
