high idle, torque conv engage, disengage

hey, i have a question for you guys?

i have been having a idle problem for about two weeks now. at startup, the engine will idle at about 1100 rpm, then eventually settle down to about 1000rpm. it has never idled this high before. it typically idles at about 750-800 rpm.

when i drive, the high idle i guess is causing my torque converter to engage and disengage when i come to a stop. this only happens when i am approaching a stop, and come to a complete stop. then when i let off the brake to start to go, i can feel the torque converter make a clunk. it did not start to do this until my engine started to idle high.

i have troubleshot this problem extensively. i have checked and verified that the tps sensor is set at the right voltage. i have checked the iac valve, and found it to have an internal short circuit. i replaced the valve, and i still have the same problem. i have also checked all my vacuum lines for leaks, and found none. i have looked over the whole engine, and dont see any problems. i have even gone to the extent to scan the pcm, and monitor in real time the different sensors. i have not found any problems. the check engine light is not on either.

all this started when i decided to clean my engine, and at the same time i also cleaned out my throttle body real good. i allowed the engine sufficient time to dry, before i started it.

if anyone has seen this same problem or something similar, please let me know. i think i may be damaging my transmission with the torque converter doing what it is doing.

thanks,

jason

I've seen this with a damaged throttle body. It won't show on any scans or codes. Question: What did you clean the throttle body with? It has a coating that, if removed, will cause the exact symptom. Did you use a throttle/sensor safe chemical? Have you checked the gaskets on the TB?

The transmission reacts to the RPM's It's confused when you are braking and the engine is racing. The Tranny won't take the abuse forever.
