Question Replace or rebuild?

Since it was X-mas and I hadn't already spent enough money on things, my truck decided it wanted a new engine for the holidays. And tho I sorta like the unique sound of a jackhammer under the hood, I'm not so sure it's gonna keep running this way. So.....

Do I replace with a new engine? Remanufactured engine? or have my current engine rebuilt?

And what are some rough estimates on $$$ for this project?

Anyone know of someone good in the Philadelphia western 'burbs area to replace this thing for me??

Any other advice is welcome...

Thanks in advance...now I'm really gonna be broke!

Come on...no one has ever replaced or rebuilt an engine here???

I know it depends on the extent of the damage. This is all new to me so I'm just looking for some / any info, advice, caveats or whatever to go on.

Thanks

Well, firsts things first. Do you have something else to drive while you rebuild or even drop in a crate? If you've never done an install it could take a couple days...

Often times it can actually be cheaper starting wiith a new shortblock rather than rebuilding the old. KB ZILLA recently installed one of ur shortblocks in his lightning and all is well again!

I can't believe this thread hasn't got more repsonse.... my 5.4 only has 80k but with this 'piston slap' thing and some other shakes and rattles I am planning for it someday and would be interested in what people have experienced.... come on it's not like this is the 'Maytag Man'...... we all know these things do wear out

with these engines 200k miles is not unheard of with regular maintenance.

As for why this post doesnt get more replies, I would say the fact that what the actual problem(s) is/are could really make a difference in what kind of job, how long it will take, cost, etc etc...

Once he figures out what is wrong with the engine Im sure he will get more replies.

The engine rebuild or crate?

I've done bolth and I'd have to say by the time it's all done
it s' the same price either way.
The crate eng will be cheaper if someone else is doning itfor you.

Check with ford they sometimes they have good deals on 302 engine swaps.

Read this thread. I swapped a 1998 4X4 which had a 4.6 in it to a 2001 5.4 with PI heads. Still working on a chip with Mike Troyer, but am very happy with the swap. Good Luck!

Remanufactored engines are usually cheaper and have descent warraties. There are BOATlLOADS of places on the Internet that will supply them.

I have had terrible results with some of those reman engines. Substandard parts were used in many of them.

Maybe you could find a wrecking yard with a documented low mileage engine from a crash. That is always my favorite way to go on a budget.

Jasper

I went with a Jasper remanufactured engine upon the recommendation of a few mechanics around here. Their reputation seems to be ok and the price wasn't outragous...$2,618 plus $750 for labor to install it.

Thought about a used engine but didn't feel like getting someone elses problems.

Thanks...
