check engine light on
1997 Ford Expedition 5.4
ok, so i disconnected the battery and installed a new PCV. The check engine light has not come back on as of yet i have only driven it to work. (3 miles or so) The idle is rough and feels like it is going to die but then it automatically increases the rpm to 1500 then drops to 500 and back an forth in some cases it sticks at 1500 for a few seconds. the car seems to run fine above 1500rpm. The car has over 100k, but has had a tune up and fuel filter installed. what should be the next step to fix the rough idle issue? thanks.

Follow the PCV hose into the back of the manifold. It sounds like you have a ruptured PCV elbow back there. The codes will come back if thats it. The codes will be p0171 & p0174. Autozone will pull the codes for free but check that elbow first. The elbow comes in the PCV hose assy from the dealer. It's about $25
OK, that seems to have taken care of the really rough idle and engine light. But i still have a problem with a slight shake every 2-4 seconds when i am parked and the engine is at idle. the shake is very slight, but i can feel it and when i accelerate the engine is slow to gain speed (especially between 1500-2000 rpm) it seems to not want to go over 2000 rpm when merging onto the freeway. I was todl it might be a bad coil plug but i thought i would look for some more expert advise. Please let me know if you have any ideas. everything i have received so far has been excelent advice. thank you.

If it were a coil pack, you would be getting a code P0301 through P0308 or possibly even P0300 Random Misfire. Did you have the codes pulled? If you don't have a ck eng light, you can rule out a lot of possiblilities and concentrate on fuel delivery. Let us know.
I did not have the codes pulled, will they still show if the check engine light has gone off?
Autozone will not pull the codes in California so that is not so good.
Fuel delivery, what areas should i look into? the fuel filter was recently replaced, maybe a few thousand miles ago. Should i consider a fuel system cleaner? which would be best? all your help is appriciated.
Thank you.

i will check ASAP, if that is not the case what will be the other possibilities? I read some posts and i think this is the order and possible issues please let me know if this sounds right,
1. check fuel filter position
2. clean IAC
3. Coil packs (one may be bad?, there any way to check without a coder?) the reason i ask is because ford dealer wants $120.00 to check the codes i think that is ridiculous.
4. O2 sensor? not sure about this one.
Once again thank you all.

For $120.00, the dealer had better do more than just pull a code. Are you sure that’s not a quote for a full diagnostic? At least you will get to read some outdated magazines and drink their bitter coffee.
California has some pretty strict regulations about automobile repair. The Bureau of Automobile Repair requires a work order/estimate anytime a second party touches a vehicle. This may be why Autozone allow it in CA.
Checking the filter flow direction and fuel pressure will eliminate a pump/filter problem.

Red Line SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner is the best 1 bottle fix.
