Jerking under light load
tazzracer00,
you may want to check the coil packs and the O2 sensors.. if an O2 sensor is bad, it'll most likely be the upstream sensors. i have a 97 4x4 w/the 4.6L, and had a similar problem. does you're rpm's drop to 400 or lower at a stop(with truck in drive)?

I got it, too! 45-50 MPH, slight uphill, warm engine, gets worse when the weather gets warmer...2001, 5.4, of course auto trans. 30,000 since last tranny fluid change, 63,000 total on the machine, no Check Light. Goes away as soon as the RPMs go up (Lock out the OD) or if I punch it... If it was a regular machine, I would be changing wires and plugs, cap and rotor.
I really do not want to spend my $$$ on a Ford mechanic. Is there a posting outlining how to change the plugs and test the coil packs on a 2001 5.4???
Thanks for all the help. I am getting frustrated...

My version of this problem is now FIXED!
Turned out to be an intermittent problem with plug wire to #2.
I used an OBD software package (AutoTap) to keep on checking the codes ( once the problem got bad enough to set codes) and found it .
Checking the wire at idle was no use in tracking the problem.
Hope this helps

hesitation and transmission noise at shift points
There was a Ford technical service bulletin for the "shift over rumble strip noise" this was caused by the torque converter lock up clutch. Most of the time the remedy was to change the transmission fluid when the noise started to occur. I did it on my 93 Lincoln town car when it happened to me. I also replaced "all of the fluid" by draining the fluid thru the torque converter drain plug besides the pan. I did it at 90000 and now I have to do it again at 125000 (noise is back). Another non related thing that caused hesitation for me a few years back was the MAF sensor got dirty (coated in soot) and makes the car run lean at light acceleration and cruise. On mine the unit required removing the "torx" security screws to get at it. To clean just use a little alchohol and Qtip. Be careful not to break the sensors. The part cost like $300-500.
