4.6 constant misfires
4.6 constant misfires
Hi,
I have a '99 with 86k miles, I have recently had to replace the plugs and wires twice within the last 3k, this time the #2 was bad, I just use the trucks on weekends. Any suggestions would be appreciated
thanks,
fsdog

where to start?
Had a 4.6 bronco..The 4.6's are a pain in the butt!! Is your truck garaged? if not it could be someting as simple as condendsation in the cap, or in the fuel, especially since it sits most of the week. Try drygas and a new cap/rotor---cheapest first! Also, fire the thing up on wednesdays or thursdays, and hop on the highway every now and again, especially if you just putt around town. Warm days/cold nights gets everything wet.
If that dosn't help, I'd make sure your distributor itself is ok (though it should be ay 80-something-K) Check vaccuum hoses too, especially any that go to/from distributor.
Since you didn't mention a check engine light, it's likely not a sensor. If the cheap fixes don't help, bring it to a mom-and-pop mechanic, and ask him to put it on the machine. sometimes the computer will point in the right direction, and it's cheap ($40 at my local mechanic's) when you consider the hassle of chasing down ignition problems. good luck.
By the way, does it improve at all once it's hot?

Well, there's no cap/rotor, so that's not the way to go. What does the number 2 plug look like when you pull it out? Anything that looks like it may have caused a mis in the plug? Where did you get the plug? What did the wire look like, any moisture on the boot of it when you pulled it out? Moisture down in the plug well would be my first guess as to what's going on.
thanks for your suggestions, I followed up with my local shop and took back the truck, found out that the wire and plug were not put in correctly, there was space between the plug and wire contact, replaced all wires and plugs(took 3 hrs), truck running normal again.
thanks
thanks
