Clearing error codes

My 2000 F150 with the 4.6 recently started missing. After checking this forum I went to autozone and they checked the code and found that the number 1 cylinder was misfiring. I changed the sparkplug and that seems to have corrected the problem. I went back to autozone to have the code cleared so the check engine light would go out and they said that the light should go out as soon as the problem is solved and that if it is still on the problem still exists (they also won't clear the code for liability reasons). I noticed in one of threads that someone said that the light would go out by itself after five hours of normal operation (or something to that affect). Anybody have any input on this?

I can see why AutoZone wouldn't clear the codes.

So you might want to get another reading and make sure it's not a new code.

In any case, to clear the code yourself, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. Leave it off for about 30 minutes (you can turn the headlights on and this should speed the process up). Then reconnect it, and start the truck and let it idle for about 10 minutes to relearn (it might run rough in the meantime) and it will have to re-learn your driving habits.
