Ratle Sound at Start up

Anyone experienced a rattle sound just after you hit the starter? it goes away 1 second after the engine starts & generally only happens when it's cold outside.. If you know the problem fix please let me know, thanks...

I noticed my '99 has been doing the same thing now that it is cold. Sounds like, well, I can't really explain it. Just a loud worn out electric motor sound maybe and only for about 1 second.

I'm not sure on the filter I use or the oil right now. I just had it changed about 500 miles ago. I think it might have been penzoil 5w30. 6 quarts. It's been the same type of oil and filter since I bought it last year this time and I've never heard this noise before.

Just one more defect to add to my heaps list.

Welcome to the piston-slap club. My 97 has 110,000 trouble-free miles on the slap- happy engine.

Iv'e been using 10w-30 (I know wrong oil) & also just recently read I should not be using Fram filter's.. What filter & oil do you recomend?? I doubht it's piston slap, it only last 1 sec if that, real quick.. It almost sounds like something is just loose for a split second, but I could be wrong..

I think maybe you are talking about a sheild on the exhaust rattling.

I wouldn't worry about noises that don't last any longer than that. In fact I am sure there are lots of use that could limit the time we hear things when we start a cold engine.

Might be the belt too never know until it sticks around long enough to troubleshoot it.

Unless of course someone on this great site has figured it out.

Filter: Motorcraft FL-802S
Oil: Whatever you want Recommended weight is 5w20. But you can use pretty much whatever...synthetic, dino, there are more threads than I can count on here about synth vs dino...

Thumbs up

Well, a 98 would use 5W/30, but not too sure on the actual engine differences that make the requirement different, though. Mine had the convertor shield rattle so bad it would rattle when I would close the pass. side door. I put a new bolt and locking nut on, and never heard another peep out of it.,,,,98

Mine has the 5.4l. This noise is not like anything I've heard before. Does not sound like pistion slap, lifters, anything metioned above. More like if you tried to start you truck while it was running. Really loud, and under the hood. Saturday I will have wife start it while i stick my head under dare.

sounds like it could be the bendix on the starter. my mustang does it and i found it to be the little gear spinning while it retracts.

Noise under the hood.

It might be the diverter valve in the heater box cycling. It sounds like something awful is happening immediately after starting the truck after it has sat for a while, such as overnight. Try turning the a/c control to OFF before you start the truck. If there is no noise, then turn on the a/c to determine if that is the noise you're hearing.

If it is, get used to it. It costs more to fix than it's worth, and it doesn't really affect anything.

rattle club

i have a 98 4.6l rattles at cold starts thought it was the belt tensioner and replaced it. but not! still rattles at cold starts everyone i spoke to says it piston slap common no big deal. i feel it is a big deal. how can a piston slap sound so tinny through a engine block? sounds like exterior to me near or on engine.
Could it be the oil i'm using 10/w30 union 76 oil.
Does anyone recommend synthetic oil or an aditive?

how do you get pics on here like with a signature?

my truck pics are located in the gallery under divewithtom
