Angry Hit from behind. What should I expect?

I got tagged from behind last night. I'm not concerned about the body damage that I incurred because that's easily repairable. I'm more concerned about any mechanical damage that may go unnoticed until it becomes a big problem down the road. (Particularly the manual transmission) Can anyone provide me a list of things that I should have inspected before settling with his insurance company?

Thanks,
Chknbone

It's hard to see in the picture, but the only real damage I received was the bumper, license plate, tow hitch, left side of the bed where the bumper hit it, and the back of the cab from when the bed hit it. Overall I think the F150 held it's own

I had a guy hit me like that once, my trailer hitch ripped through his engine esp when i was driving off of his hood. All i got was a bent plug connecter, i just bent it back. He didnt have insurance so i asked if he just wanted me to leave, he said yeah so i just took off.

Man that picture sure is funny tho.

Looks like you just need to replace the bumper and have the bed painted where it was damaged. Dont know about the bed shifting tho, you said it hit the cab. I would check the bed bolts etc.

Just have the frame checked for square. I doubt that anything major was bent.
By the looks of it all you got was a bent bumper. Did your trailer hitch cut that square hole in his bumper?

Well actually I'm just assuming that the bed bumped into the cab during impact. Since it's a dark blue it's kind of hard to tell and I haven't taken the time to get a flashlight out there and see for sure. I had that happen back in the late 80's but that was when a full size Bronco hit the back of my TOYota truck

JMC,
The square hole is definitely from my hitch going through. I've seen several of your post before and you seem to know A LOT about the F150 engines, trannys, etc....so if I had just taken my foot off of the clutch when the guy hit me, do you think it could cause any damage to the tranny?

PS - My attorney contacted me about 2 minutes after the wreck occurred. We have a pretty tight relationship, as a matter of fact, I've called her "Mom" since I was born

I could very well be wrong, and if someone knows for sure hopefully they will chime in.

Since they hit the hitch receiver I would “think” it may weaken any of the welds that are part of the hitch receiver and if it were me, and for safety when towing, I would replace the hitch receiver with a new one. (of couse having the other person at fault pay for it)

Again, maybe that is no cause for concern, but the first thing that came to mind when I seen it. The way I look at it is at the moment the person that rear ended you is at fault and responsible for any and all repairs.

Could you imagine towing something and if the hitch receiver welds were weak and something broke that what ever you were towing could come loose and maybe hit someone else thus making you the person at fault…

Just something to think about, or at least have someone check out if you have your truck checked out.

With a manual transmission, not likely to have lasting undetermined, damage. An automatic is probably a different story.

Mine was hit by a toyota P/U ( 4x). It hit square on the rear bumper and hitch. It did bend the frame down where the hitch attaches to it. The bed also hit the cab. They replaced the bed only to find that the cab was no longer sitting square. they had to loosen the cab and move it back even. Have the rear seal of the trans checked. The drive shaft could have push up inside the trans a little farther than normal and damaged the seal. Have it 4 wheel aligned ( might have trouble getting some places to do it since it technically can't be adjusted in the rear. I had the rear spring mounts bend on mine and the rear axle did not sit exactly straight. A lot of this stuff is not easy to see with the naked eye and unfortunately once you get the truck back and drive it away, it is almost impossible to get anyone to fix it. Did your seat recliner break?

looking at the pictures, he went under you! good thing! the force would of lifted the wait of the truck off the rear wheels limiting the impact on your drive line. but i would still take it to a reputable tranny shop. my 98 was hit from the rear by a 1971 F250, damage was about the same shifted bed, tweaked bumper, minor body work. good part was they have to repaint the whole tailgate(good by scatches), and i was able too get off the brake just before impact. it saved my drive line too. i've got the r4w automatic. but i still had it checked out on his dime. got a free fluid and filter change.
