5.4L Question: How much can it take?
5.4L Question: How much can it take?
Hey all,
I am about to sell my old truck ('99 Lariat 5.4L Supercab) to my brother, but am in somewhat of a dilemma. I have had the thing since it was new, and it now has about 85,000 miles, hard miles on it. I have used it for occasional towing, but really I just have the lead foot and step on it whenever possible. I am naturally hard on my vehicle, so here lies my question: how durable is the 5.4L? To be honest, the tach has hit 4000 rpm's more times than I wish to admit. I do not wish to sell it if there will be problems soon to come, so your opinions would be appreciated. I use synthetic oil, but I realize it is not magical. Should I be more worried about transmission troubles? Thanks in advance.

Not sure this helps but I would much rather buy one with over 70,000 that didn't make a bunch of racket than one with 20,000 miles.
I think if it runs good you can count on many more miles out of it. Even the noisy pain in the butt motors seem to tally up alot of miles.

My 97 5.4 has 120,000 miles on it and I'll bet it's seen far more abuse than yours. I service it regularly, but it also spends more time than it deserves at the rev limiter. I tow a heavy trailer and definatly work it hard. The motor and tranny are original and are like new. It uses no oil and makes no strange sounds. Totally impressed. I'm sure yours has plenty of life left. Now you're not going to want to sell it.lol
Only if your lucky....
Hey guys..
I drive the S**t out of my 99' 5.4 and for the last 130K it has seen 5450rpm Wide Open Throttle upshifts at least 5 times a day.
I had the tranny go out on me at 76k I bought the truck 14 months old with 39,080 on the clock.
Since then the tranny is fine....i drip a lil drop of oil from the head gasket on #4 cylinder when she's cold....
i would never trade her....
But this is just me and my luck with my truck, my family and I combine a total of 13 fords, and have great luck with them.
Hope this helps..
