Thumbs down 6.0 diesel

I have a new 2003 f350 diesel 6.0 with less than 3000 miles. The rear main seal went out at 2000 miles, took 11 days in the dealer to fix and went out again at 3300 miles. Now in shop, estimated time to fix is 10 days. Anyone else having these problems??

The few members who have the 6.0L here dont seem to have any major problems that I have seen.

Your questions may be better answered here:

my neice's husband has had so much trouble with his 6.0 F350 that Ford is apparently going to take in back and give him a new vehicle. most of the trouble has been injectors i believe.

I would make sure they either give him a 7.3L Powerstroke, or maybe even a Dodge cummins.

I woudn't own one of the new 6.0's

I think the *newest* 6.0L's are supposed to have most of the problems fixed...

People are on this big "buy it back" kick.
90% of the problems I've seen have to do with PCM calibrations concerns.
The 7.3 had just as many concerns when it first came out.

My G/F uncle is a ford certified diesel tech. and has had the pleasure of working on all the trucks that come into his dealership (an SVT one at that) since only a diesel cert. tech can even touch the truck now (used to only have to have one in the shop). Well he said there is a recall on the inj. on a run of the vin. and the kicker is ford will only let him replace the one that is bad at that time, even though all 8 will more than likley fail. So the customer is having to return 7 more times to fix what could be fixed at one time. Also there is a Head Gasket problem (some leak very little, and some just leak like its a waterfall) well all the ones he has done not one of the gaskets were bad but he has checked the bolts and they are streaching far past spec. and that is what he feels is the real faulty part. Also the Auto trans. seems get this, I cant believe a ford could have this problem but....(lol) is a little weak for the power of diesel and breaks easy.

Can you imagine having a fleet of trucks that would be in the shop at least on 7 occasions. That would suck.

Here is my rant, I really hate going to the dealer, it's so inconvenient. You almost have to take time off work. I have a 2002 Triumph Sprint motorcycle, had a gas leak becuase triumph made the connectors out of plastic and they are known to fail. Luckly I wasn't out touring 100's of miles from home. So I take the bike to the shop, and they were going to replace with the same part, I said isn't their anything else they can do? They went to the hardware store and bought brass fittings and installed them. They even covered it under warrenty, though I won't get any more warrenty on that part as it's not stock, but who cares I won't need a warrenty on it ever again!

Especially when you take off work to get your truck fixed and then pick it up and the Tech is shaking his head explaining how he fixed one thing but knows you will be back in less than a week because he is sure this or that part is going to fail.

I guess every warranty has it's pain in the butt clause built in.

The thing is that the dealer and the 'techs' there KNOW what needs to be done, but because they work for 'da man' they cannot do their job correctly. I see this in almost every type of business. As for autos go, the first couple or 3 years of a new engine, body style, truck, etc are always teh worst. They have bugs and such....moreover, some manufacturers (like dodge, for instance) will never redesign a better part that is failing. Its like the manufacturer never finishes a job before designing something new. It's what my father calls "half assing it". I know any of you guys can go out to your vehicle and open any part of it and think of a BETTER way to do it.....and most of yall aren't engineers. That is what baffles me, the certified, high paid, smart engineers do not build things the way they should be built.
The dodge has a plenum gasket leak because there is a plate bolted TO the bottom of the intake. Now you tell me WTF is up with that? you don't NEED a plate on the bottom of it, there is nothing inside the intake that needs servicing....NOTHING. So, why not make the intake ONE PIECE or weld the bottom to it instead of adding a piece of metal with different expansion rates and putting a gasket in there? Im not an engineer.....but its pretty damn obvious what needs to be done.

But the bottom line is.....you paid your money...they got theirs....game over, they win, you lose.

Yeah, but you work with engineers - that makes you guilty by association!

LOL!

I wouldn't put too much into what i've seen on here if i were to purchase a 6l as most of its just hearsay. (mostly the trans being weak and head gasket leaks, the rear main (not as common as the injectors) and injectors are a probem)(not all of the injectors fail - usually low milage)

The 6.0 l may have some preoblems but a good running 6l can't be beat.

Never heard of a 6l head gasket leak nor the trans being weak.

I guess we will see right here how it works. Those that buy the New F 150 will problably add new pages to the troubleshooting Chart.

I think my next ford will be the year before the next major change. Or one I find on the used lot with 100,000 miles or more that appears to run good.

The good thing bout diesels owners rarely complain about the noises it makes. LOL
