Engine vibration?

'01 5.4 Screw 39k 2wd

All,
I kind of have a annoyance with my truck that seems to have developed in the last couple of monthes. While sitting at a stop I feel this very slight vibration/pulsation/surge in the pedals and wheel. I do not remember it being there before. While rolling on the street it is not noticable because of the bumps in the road. So I pop the hood this morning and watch for vibrations in the motor. You can see the motor sit and vibrate in the bay too the same vibration I would feel in the cab. The truck seems to run well but it sort of feels like a engine mount is going but not that harsh. It doesn't seem to change with ac on or off. Sure, I could live with it but I would like to take care of it before it hurts something more vital or before I drive an '04 and decide mines not good enough. :-)

Any ideas on what to look at?

Try putting it in neutral or park. If it goes away it could be a tranny problem.

When I looked at it this morning it was in park. But I will try neutral also.

Could it be a harmonic balancer going? 5.4s don't have balance shafts, do they?

Keep em coming.

If it does it in park it will do it in neutral as well. So the suspect parts are from the Torque Converter forward. With the engine running have a look at the belt and the pullies. Do you see any Wobbling? Is the belt chaffed on the edges?

I will check the belt for fraying, but when I watched the pulleys, they seemed to look smooth, but the vibration is so slight I doubt I could see it.

I wonder if the fan clutch might be failing or it sort of feels like a cycl is not getting enough fuel? Do our trucks have harmonic balancers?

I've got the same type problem. When I put the truck in gear, a vibration starts. The Ford dealership indicated that there is a TSB concerning a vibration and based on such, replaced the motor mounts. Putting it back in park makes the vibration go away. Anyone care to comment on their diagnosis?

Now the vibration seems "muted". Prior to the fix, it felt like something was loosely vibrating against the frame or some part of the vehicle.
Now it feels like whatever was vibrating has been more securely fastened to the truck. The virbration isn't quite as strong, but is still present.

I'm wondering if the Lubeguard that everyone has been talking about might make a difference. I'm totally fed up with the dealership at the moment so I'm not quite sure where to turn. There are other dealerships, but none are close enough to provide shuttle service.

Just in case the sig doesn't come up, I'm driving a 2000 F150 SC 4x4. It's got a little over 51K miles.

I have tamed my engine vibration down significantly with a treatment of Auto-RX. If you don't see anything significantly worn or broken maybe the ring grooves could use a good cleaning. I suppose dirty fuel injectors could contribute to the cylinders not firing with the same equal force.

Similar problem...

Same type of thing happening here as well.

Feels like just an occasional miss in one of the plugs. Doesn't really qualify as a rough idle. Cleaned out the throttle body a couple weeks ago and it seemed a bit smoother, but didn't completely get rid of the problem. I thought fuel injector as well, but not sure how to totally trouble shoot them or clean them.

It's also time to get the trans fluid flushed and filled again (just done two years ago and it got rid of the trans shudder with the addition of LubeGuard). How many people change the trans fluid on a regular basis? (I see a new thread here).

Just a frustrating thing (like several others I have with this truck)but would love to get rid of it.

Let's put all these great minds together and squeeze out a solution.

I would suspect a coil that is a little wet with either moisture or oil. I would get my 7mm socket out pull and clean each coil. I often times clear my rough idle by cleaning some moisture off that seems to forever build down that long plug hole.

Cleaning the fuel including injectors is easy, just look to the friends on bob the oil guy site. Schaeffer's Neutra 131. I used it to convert my truck from regular gas to reformulated gas it the results were fast and effective.

I ordered it over the phone. 800-737-1747, talked to Tim, in Texarcana (sp?).

I have also seen support for Chevron Techron, Fuel Power, Amsoil PI, BG 44K, RedLine SI-1, and SeaFoam, but most popular seems to be mixing 131 with Fuel Power. 3 of FP to 1 of 131

In 2001 the early ones there is a TSB on the motor mounts check with your dealer regarding your year.

Auto-RX is an ester based cleaner. It has no affect on oil, it just cleans. It is used to disolve and clean varnish out of transmissions before changing the fluid.

Lube Guard is a friction modifier, and I don't remember what that means. It also has esters in it. It is added with the new fluid to stop or prevent shuder in transmissions.
