additives ?

i have noticed that quite a few issues have been resolved through fuel, oil and tranny treatments. just wondering which are the most common (or gives best results). i have heard alot about seafoam for fuel treatment and lucas for the tranny. what are some of you guys thoughts ? i also hear lucas has a good oil additive as well. at what mileage would you start adding this additives?..............thanks

IMHO,
I wouldn't use any oil additives. Just stick to a good maintence schedule and use a quality oil filter.

Ya,

That lucas demo that is in just about every parts store is so hokey. Talk about snake oil.

Take that handle and spin it at about 300 rpm and you will see the oil/lube foam up really bad.

Here is a what I'm talking about:

What's a "good" oil filter?

I just use the motorcraft FL-820S.

the fl820s is prolly the best all around filter for the money. it is a re-canned purolator.

most addatives are not worth the money or the container they come in.

the one that I know are good and have tests to back them up (real tests not marketing hype) are:

Any BG product like BG-44K
Sea foam
Techron
isopropyl based gas line dryer

thats about it.

most of the correct fluids for this truck will already have any needed addatives already in them.

I havent put any additives in my truck..not yet anyway, I dont think it needs any.

What kind of motor oil would you recommend? Is Penzoil 10w30 good? I've seen alot of arguments over synthetic vs. regular oil...I dont want to start anything like that though

I believe that any name brand oil is fine. I actually switched from Pennzoil to Castrol GTX because of what Gopher has said on this topic as well as a very good past history with the stuff.

My only argument is to NOT use a 10w-xx oil. Please oh please no debate on this!! it is just my humble opinion!

peace-

Every 3,000 miles I change my oil. At every oil change I put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank. When I asked my dealer (service department) about it being a problem with warranty they told me it would be no problem and actually recommended it. Told me it would keep the injectors nice and clean.

Oil Additive bad, Fuel Additives good.

I recommend using a fuel additive/intake cleaner periodically. USA Fuel contains methenol/alcohol. Burning these fuels leave behind deposits that can increase emmission, and rob fuel economy.

Chevron Techron is popular. I use Amsoil PI.

    5w-xx or LIGHTER not heavier

I personally use BG-44K and/or Techron every quarter.

USA gasolines also use lots of detergents that keep things clean. there will be very little varnish build up unless you are a short tripper. the bigger problem on these modern engines is carbon build up because the EGR system is almost constantly putting exhaust into the combustion system.

even all the brand name oils on the market have detergents in them that help keep things nice and clean. what usually causes sludge is short tripping and/or an un-serviced PCV system. and no amount of addatives will solve these problems.

As one part of the answer.
Seafoam is fantastic at cleaning any way it is used. I use it every 5000 miles since being introduced to it through this forum.

I can't say my truck's problems are solved but I do know there is no any carbon build up and or injectors plugged.

Any way I prefer the SeaFoam to any of the others I have used.
