And the answer is: "what ever makes you sleep better at night."

I sleep better with a first oil change before 1500 miles, and changing to synthetic after 5000 miles. Changing to synthetic at the fist oil change is growing in popularity and success.

The big issues is that most people still like to do a few short oil changes while the engine is breaking in and wear metals are hight in the oil. That being the case, run cheap oil for those short intervals.

I change at the first 1000 miles, Mobil 1 in the F150 with Motorcraft 820S Filter (I change myself) and Motorcraft with 820S Filter in the Mustang (dealer changes). Then I change again at 5000 miles and then every 5000 miles thereafter.

Good advice from Texcowboy9. I did the same with my truck with the exception of letting the dealer perform the first oil change at 1k with their oil. I then changed the oil at 5k with Mobil1 and change every 5k since.

Even if you go with synthetic early that will lengthen the breakin period. There are many high performance vehicles that start out with synthetic. The only "bad " desicision would be not to use a synthetic oil.
