Intermittant Wiper Prob.

Hey All

I've got a problem with my intermittant wipers. They will only work when the transmission is in park. When I put the transmission in drive, the wipers won't work on intermittant.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks...

Hello BeeJay,

I had a 97 2wd XL, while driving the wipers used to start up on there own and spray wiper fluid all over (usually just after I washed it and cleaned the windows), definitely some electrical problem. I bet there is a defect in the year's wiper system. I would take it to the dealer and check for a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for that year's wiper or electrical system.

Sounds like you might need to replace the multi-function switch. (turn signal Lever). Buy one and do it yourself.

I get the same thing... my wipers will turn themselves on an off now and then.. usually just one or 2 wipes... seems last spring it did it all the time... then nothing for like 6 months... now it just started up again a few weekds ago... and it always happens after I clean the windows (or at least it seems to)

I have a '99 F-150 XLT ext. cab

Sounds like you have the dreaded "ghost wipe". The dealer answer is to replace the multi-function switch @ about $84 parts + labor.

You can clean the "green goo" out of the switch yourself and see if it fixes it. If it doesn't buy the switch at the parts counter and replace it, which saves you the labor. The attached link refers to a fast turn signal, but it is the same "fix". Do a SEARCH on "Ghost Wipe" and you'll see.
