Bad Fuel Mileage 4.9

I have a 1992 F150 4x4 with a 300 inline six, it has an automatic with od. I have owned for the last 4 years and still can not get any decent fuel mileage out of it. The best it would ever do is 14.9 and that was driving at 55 mph. It now is averaging 13.8 I have replaced most everything I can think of, to fix the bad mileage but I must be missing something because to still gets bad mileage. I replaced all of the usual electronics, wires, plugs, oyxgen sensor, coolant temp sensor, fuel pressure regulator, pcv valve, exhaust system. A scan shows everything is fine now but still bad mileage. The truck is sometimes alittle hard to start and stumbles sometimes. My next move would be to replace the fuel pump and then the fuel injectores. The truck has 204,000 miles and uses no oil. I had a 1980 300 six model in the past with a carb and it got 18 mph, I know this truck should do better than upper 13 mpg. Please any ideas would be welcome

Thanks!
Jima

At work we have a '94 E150 with the 4.9. The guy driving it is getting about 10mpg. The thing is a complete dog but it's loaded pretty good so it's got some weight to lug. I believe it's also got the 3.08 rear gear. Maybe it would get better mileage with 3.55 rear gears. The driver would be less likely to put the pedal to the floor to get moving.

The 4.9 is a big motor. I had a '94 F150, 4.9, 5-speed, 4X2. I never checked my mileage on that. It wasn't fast but it could get up from a light nicely. It's an appropriate motor with the 4X4.

Was your '80 F150 a 4X4 too? Was that an auto? I would say that your mpg is probably similar to what others with that configuration get. I'm sure you could squeeze 1 or 2mpg by spending a few more bucks but I don't think your going to see 18mpg.

Good luck!

Hi Jima

How old or how many miles on f.injectors? Bad/worn/dirty injectors="bad mpg" Are they OEM? if so, time for a change. Ive seen them last 10yrs. before replacement needed.

Good luck...OT
