closed cooling system

I'm probably dating myself with the question...

When closed cooling systems first came out, there was a pressure cap on the radiator and a overflow or expansion tank. When the pressure reached around 15 psi, the pressure cap would allow coolant flow into an non-pressurized expansion tank. The tank had a vent hose for air to rise to the top of the coolant in the tank and escape.

Now all I see is vehicles where the expansion tank is part of the closed system itself, and the pressure cap is purportedly on the expansion tank itself. My question is where does excess pressure/coolant escape to on these systems?

cpadpl,

From the book;

The degas bottle:

l holds surplus coolant when hot.

l de-aerates the system reducing engine hot spots.

l is the location for service fill.

l allows coolant expansion and system pressurization [110 kPa (16 psi)].

l is the air separation during operation.

l replenishes coolant to system.

If the pressure goes over 16psi the cap will vent and coolant will spill. If you look closely at the bottle there are actually two tanks that are inter connected. The larger one sits over the lower rad hose and keeps the cooling system topped up. the smaller one takes the overflow from the rad. Iit is connected at the bottom, middle and top to the larger tank via a small slots. This acts as the air seperator. Overflow from the rad goes into the top of the small tank and the air escapes into the large one via the upper slots and coolant sits at the bottom and flows to the large tank via the lower slot.

Ps; I rember rads with just an overflow tube.
