Cool To Cut Or Not To Cut

I know this has been kicked around for a long time i don't want to get rid of my factory air box. but with chip and 6# pulley and other mods i need more intake air to engine i know my 2003 lightning could use more air so that leaves me no choice either i cut or i don't so lf i modify botton and say put in a screen that will work of course to keep out bugs etc. i already have k&n filter i just like the looks of my factory air box/ any different ideals how to do this thanks for your replys

I would search for a used box and experiment with it. I would suppose that if you cut the bottom out it would breath better. good luck and let us know if you get good results

With Form follows function, the looks of the unit might need to be put aside to get the air flow that you need.

If you look at something like a Anderson Ford Motorsports open element with a ram air addition to the end of the open filter, that might do the trick. The other is something like a Power pipe from your tuner of choice.

JDM and AFM both have the MAFS adapter plate that has the IAT sensor relocation hole in it, vs the N/A MAFS adapter plate. I don't know who the mfgr of this is.

From the testing that I did on my N/A 5.4, I found that in the under 60 mph area a closed air box with a exteral feed point has a lower lbs/min flow rate then an open filter FIPK.

This is the sucking on the 3" straw problem of the closed element FIPKs, again on the N/A 5.4L engines.

If you have an open element filter, with the addition of a exteral feed point, you get the higher lbs/min flow rate of the open element, and the exteral feed of air forced into the intake under speed.

The under hood temp testing that I did, this was a only a problem in stop and go traffic, and even under a mild take off, the air under the hood comes to par with outside air by time the truck is going 35 mph. I don't have temp readings for the hammer down lauches, but I would take a SWAG that the air temp under hood and extrnal comes to par quicker. Again that is a SWAG without data to back it up.

Good luck, let us know what you come up with.

Steve
