From a friend of mine that works at a Ford dealer, the two most common problems that would cause a system too lean code are vacuum leak or dirty MAF sensor.
From this board, most people seem to find a problem with the vacuum connection on the back side of the throttle body adapter. This connects to your PCV valve. That would be the first thing I would check.
Or you can do a search on this site using P0171 or P0174 and it should bring up quite a few threads about this same topic.
Good luck

I agree that you should check for vacuum leaks and the MAF sensor, however I found the on my 98 4.2 after 8 months of searching and replacing sensor after sensor it was the feul pump itself that was defective. I have not had a problem since then. I would check for vacuum leaks first, because to fuel pump is around $100
