rusty gas tank

Any ideas how to clean rust and crud out of a gas tank? I bought a 93 F150 that had been sitting with a nearly empty tank, must have gotten some rust inside. I put 2 new fuel filters in and it runs fine for a week then begins to start hard again. The old filters have rust particleswhen I drain them out.
Thanks

That rust would be very hard to get all of it out. Those year ford trucks were bad about rusting though & would probally start leaking later. Your better off replacing the tank, most Autoparts stores can get you a aftermarket replacement for a reasonable price. IMO

Pull the tank. Remove the sender/fuel pump and all plumbing. (drain it first) Take the tank to your local Radiator shop and have it boiled out. Then have them coat it with epox. Very common repair for cars older than yours and works great. They boil out all of the rust and gunk. Then they put a load of the epoxy in it and roll it around to coat the entire inside. Usually dosen't cost more that $50. and lasts almost forever. ( if you put a big enough dent in the tank you could cause the epoxy to crack but a dent that size would prob. put a hole in the tank anyway) I have never seen a repeat problem with a coated tank. Good luck!

Depending on the severity of the gunk/rust "build-up," boiling is an option, but if it's not too bad, then you can insert a chain into the tank and then shake the tank as much as you and a buddy can physically do. Remove the chain, wash or powerwash the inside then coat with a special gas tank sealer available from several sources like Whitney, Autokrafters, etc.
