Thoughts on Nissan full size Titan . . .

So what are everyone's thoughts on this new truck? It actually looks pretty nice to me. The size seems about right (it looks as large as the domestics . . . possibly larger) and the engine looks impressive. 5.6 litre V8 300 HP and 375 lb ft at 3,200 RPM. Also come with a 5 speed auto.

Has anyone had a chance to see one of these at an auto show or something like that? If so, what are your impressions?

There was one here at our auto show here a few months ago. It looked ok and there were some new features on it that no one else has like the 180 degree swinging rear doors

The inside was designed will probably not go over too well with people. It has the same style floor shifter that the 04 F150 Lariats will have, or at least some models will. The one at our show did. And it looks like the backseat of the extended cab will have no room, and the way that they boxed up underneath the seats looks terrible to me.

Article in the new issue of Truckin' shows the Titan with four doors, all hinged at the front like a Supercrew. Perhaps the one in the auto show picture is a concept vehicle or Nissan is going to make two, a la Supercrew and Supercab.

They will have two chassis, King Cab and Crew Cab. Nissanusa.com

The Towing package is $800, but includes a tranny tremp gauge, towing mirrors (heated and memory on LE - Lariat equivalent - models), and vehicle dynamic control. To get the sunroof, you have to add a family entertainment package, so a $2500 total option. Options add up quickly, but who knows what the 04 F-150 will be too.

I sorta like the look of the Titan.
The power rating for the 5.6L isn't too bad either.
If the price is comparible to everything else then I will definitely be interested.

Interesting feedback. I'm really interested in seeing how the new V8 performs against the domestic trucks . . . it certainly seems to be a domestic truck style powerplant. Lots of torque available low in the RPM range and a healthy tow rating.

They could have a winner. I would certainly pick it over a Tundra. The new Dodge's and the good ole F-150 would be the other 2 two that I would consider for my next purchase. I guess since I want a 3/4 ton next time around, I'm down to 2

I don't care for the front end look but everything else I do like, especially the engine. Nissan usually has pretty good quality too.

Pretty good quality? Try damn good... My mother owns a '95 Nissan King Cab Pick-Up with V6. Over 8 years it's required nothing more than fluid changes and it still runs strong. When I was buying my new truck in 2000, she tried time and again to get me to buy a Nissan, but I wanted a full-size truck. I wished Nissan made one, but they didn't. Now it seems both of our wishes will come true. I'll wait at least after the first couple of months, if not for the second model year. But I will be buying a Titan for my next truck.

I belive I read where Honda is a couple years away from coming out with a fullsize truck aswell somewhere around 2005-2006.
The domestics should have their hands full as far as maintaining market share with competition from Toyota, Nissan and Honda within the next few years for what will more than likely be atleast a slightly more reliable truck.

Personally, while I'm sure it will prove to be a quality and reliable truck, I don't care for the looks of the new Nissan (or for that matter just about any other Nissan.) In the longterm though, competition will force Ford to build a better quality and more reliable truck.

The more competition the better. It should only drive the manufacturers to provide a better product. I second the fact that most Nissans are quite ugly, especially their current truck.

The new Dodge SRT (or whatever they call it with the 500 HP Viper motor) is a great example of how competition has lead to Ford building a better truck. Without it, you can bet Ford would have never put 500 HP in the new Lightning for 2004. As Toyota, Nissan and Honda start churning out more and more top quality, reliable trucks, the domestics will be forced to meet (and hopefully at somepoint exceed) the level of quality coming out from the competition to stay competative in the future. (Which over time should alleiviate the common quality issues we have grown to resent such as predetonation, head-gasket leaks, blown plugs, door cracks, etc.) With how much of Ford's future is on the line with the new 2004 F-150, personally I expect to see a dramatic improvement in initial build quality and longterm reliability in the new F-150 that will set a new level of expectations among full-sized trucks just like Ford did in 1996 when the current model debuted.
