oil pressure

I own a '98 150 Supercab, 4.6L V8. I was driving down the highway the other day and noticed that my oil pressure gauge had completely bottomed out and the oil light was on. I made it off the highway expecting to find my plug missing and oil dripping out but found nothing of the sort. Dip stick looked OK. I am hoping that the gauge was failing and triggered the light but I was wondering if I may have lost my oil pump. I just had the truck towed to the nearest dealer to figure out what's going on. Any advice?

Well just like you said, "oil pressure gauge". It measures the oil pressure not the amount of oil in the pan/engine. Just because it's all there doesn't mean it is circulating. I hope for your sake that it was just your gauge that stopped working. Let us know how you make out.

I believe that it is not actually a guage. The needle has an on/off position. Its a dummy light that looks nice.

You wont see it rising and falling. Up or down thats it.

Running on the highway with no oil pressure would be noisey. Clattering valves ETC. You might just have a sending unit problem. I am sure the dealer will let you know but I would bet on the sender before I would beleve oil pressure loss
