engine problem? tranny problem?

my dad has a 1991 f-150 single cab, long wheel base, auto with the 5.8 liter. the door jam has trans code E (4R100)? the truck has 84,xxx the tranny was rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago. the fuel filter was just changed a few weeks ago.
on his way to work it slamed the 1 to 2 shift. then when he going 65mph it started shifting from od to 3rd back to od and to 3rd the check engine light came on and then it died. he pulled over got it going again at 65 it did the od to 3rd back to od and to 3rd and died. he again pulled off the road go it going and it acted fine the rest of the way to work and did fine coming home.
whats up with this thing is it a engine or tranny problem? we are planing on changing the tranny fluid this weekend.

sorry if this is the wrong form, feel free to move. i posted here because the engine died, if it is a problem with the tranny why did the engine died.

thanks,
travis

First thing I'd do, is have the PCM scanned for trouble codes (if any are stored). The E4OD transmission is a electronic shift Trans., could be a bad TP sensor or a bad DTR sensor.

just went to autozone to get the code(s) read and no one there knew how to do it, and they said no one will be there tomrrow that knows how to do it so it won't be until Sat.

the truck is getting worse. on the way there going a steady 45 it downshifts, upshifts the check engine light comes on and it won't do nothing (foot to floor and it keeps slowing down) then it will engage and take off and the engine light goes out.

on the way back it does the same thing but dies and the check engine light stays on now.

it is is also getting hard to crank at times now.

thanks for posting Tailgator, i forgot to mention that the tps was replaced about 4 or 5 months ago. what is the DTR sensor?
thanks again

The DTR sensor mounts on the side of the Transmission behind the shift lever. It tells the PCM what gear the trans. is in. You might want to check the wiring connector to the TP sensor. Ford has had problems with corosion(sp) in this area due to a coolant leak(throttle body hoses).

called autozone to see if anyone could read the codes today and sure enough someone was there.
we ran the truck down there and it did the same down, up, down shifts, check engine light and kill thing. when we pulled into autozone it died, when cranked back up it started running very ruff. if it just sits at idol it dies after 30 sec. or so. the next time we cranked it black smoke started coming out the tailpipe (never done this before) and it started vibrating so bad that the whole truck was shaking and the only way to keep it running was to constantly rev it (when it was about to die hit the gas it would stall out and then come back hard making a rattling sound).
they read the codes, all 10 of them. when they looked them up on the computer they could only reference 2 of them.
one was check wires to tranny, and the other was check for loose or burnt wires on tranny. the other 8 couldn't be found. so we asked them to write all the codes do they repled "oh these won't do you any good, the other codes are in the same relation just check the tranny wires." he then walked off.
so its like wtf.
we just droped it so we could get the truck home (getting dark and started to rain). went out to truck cracked it, ruff idel and died when it was put in gear. now everytime we put it in gear it dies.
so we pulled it to the local shop and left there for monday. so what do yall think is going on?? is the engine messed up or what? any ideas?

thanks
travis
