how to test ignition coils?

Just curious, have seen several instances in the past where it was recommended to test an ignition coil if the engine is missing/misfiring. Does this just involve removing the coil and measuring the resistance across the contacts? or do the dealer techs use a different method.

Having worked there, I know for a fact that you can take it off and in to AutoZone and they can test it. It's just a matter of resistance measurements across the terminals and they have the specs.

Yes, but...

Only if they know what they are doing. One of those idiots told me mine was bad, so he went and got a new one from the shelf. I asked him to do the same thing to it and it responded the same way. His reply was "I guess yours is o.k. then???"

You can look at this site to see how to check it yourself. Plus, the Haynes manual describes how to test lots of things.
