Blue smoke on startup

Every now and then when I start my 99 F150 4.6 V-8 up blue smoke comes out of the exhaust. Sometimes there is no smoke, a little smoke, or a lot of smoke. Then it may not do it for several days. Is this a valve seal going bad? Or is there something else I need to look for?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Blue smoke is diff. oil smoke. Normally when it smokes at start up it is valve seats. You might try an additive and see if it helps. smoke on acccel. is normally rings.

Please check my post on 4/14/03 about "smoking 4.6, dealer stumped" Does this sound like your truck too? This issue was not resolved during the warranty period. Ouch!
