What Water Temp. is Optimal For a 4.6 V8?

Replacing the mechanical fan on a 4.6 V8, with a Mark VIII LIncoln 2-speed fan, will free up about 15 horseposer. That is according to everyone I have talked to ... and heard from.
Now that I am about to begin using the new fan, I need to set the twin Thermostat Temperature Controllers to come on in series to keep the engine at the optimum operating temperature. This is where you experts can jump in here any time now!!!!

I understand that the engine will provide optimal performance operating at as close to 205-degrees as possible. It is important to try to maintain this temperature. What temperature have you experts heard is the optimal operating temperture for a 4.6 V8 engine?

Further, what temperatures would you target for the slow speed side of the fan to come on ... and for the high speed side of the fan?

Thank you for your input.

I would think 180* is the ideal.

The stock termostat is 192*. You probably want the low speed to kick on at 200* and high maybe 210. If you set it too low it will never turn off.

Thanks Rocketir . . .

The head Ford Mechanic just installed a new electric fan setup on a new ford for someone. He just wnet through all of this and was of some help. He said, "Your new fan will free up 15 HP and keep your engine at a more constant temperature."

I asked him what temperature would be ideal for the best performance and gas mileage? He said, "We try to keep thim at 205-degrees .... that is where you will get your best gas mileage and engine performance..."

So, you are right in the ball park!! I am going to ask one more source before I begin setting my twin thermosats: www.crownvic.net

Thanks again,

My auto meter temp gauge never climbs much beyond 180 during normal operation, that is the temp of the coolant. One thing to remember here is the factory temp gauge is located in the block near cylinder #1 it doesn’t touch the coolant and measures a much higher reading.

Hi ROCKETier I got these thermosats at Schuck's Auto Parts. Most any place has them. Twoenty bucks each for the mechanical version. Which I think is reliable.

Hey Big Red 4: !! You comment about your Auto Meter Water Guage not ever going over 180-degrees peeked my interest. If a 192-degree thermostat is stock for the 4.6 V8, then why would the water temp only get up to 180?

The Ford guys down at the garage say they would like to see the engine coolent temp run around 205-degrees to provide the best performance and gas mileage. My question is: Where am I suppose to plug, or screw, into the engine? I am ordering a new mechanical Water Meter from Auto Meter. And another question:
why did you say the sensor never touches the water? I'm really lost here.

Bill--

see my thread, " Cobra R Waterpumps" for correct running temps. Were actually talking about electric fans, now.

G luck.
