Rapping noise for first 30 seconds

my motor makes a rapping noise when I first start it - lasts about 30-40 seconds then fades away. I've had my 2002 F150 supercrew (4.6L) in for service since last Thursday but it only makes the noise when first started (after about 8 Hrs sitting). Seems to me that the oil isn't getting up to the head.
They tell me they will have to call in to some hot line to get advice when they can give a better description of the noise. Anyone else had this problem. Thanks all.
Forgot to say its got about 17000 miles and the oils been changed every 300.

Well first things first. Stay away from any oil filter without a good drainback valve. Fram is about the worst one out the anymore. Purolator is cheap and fairly good, Motorcrafts are good and made by Purolator I think. The Pure-one, Mobil 1, and K&N rank the best and are under $10.

Lower weight oil will pump to the top of the engine quicker.

It should have been fixed by 02 but it could be piston slap as the 97-00 had.

Thanks for your help - I read the threads on piston slap and I hope that changing the brand of oil filter will do it. This is my first vehicle that I haven't been changing my own oil on - broke my arm about 3 months ago. Guess I'll get back on it myself.

Rapping noise

You most likely are dealing with Piston Slap-----You'll read many articles about this and ford will do nothing.
It usually last anywhere from 10-60 seconds depending on the temperature.

I'm Not getting the oil filter drainback thing. The filter mounts upside down, so oil will always be in the filter, it can' drain out, unless by some sort of siphon. So the logic of not using Fram filters because of bad drainback valves is bogus. Can anyone tell me why Fram filters are bad for our trucks other that the valve?
