Ah Ha, Watson! We may have a lead. I wish Ford would just decide on a number. Maybe they should round it off to the nearest tenth.:o

Well after reading those HP ratings I can see why a 4.2L & 5 speed will dyno with more rear wheel HP with a few simple mods than a 4.6 with Auto trans, heh

manufacturers dyno the engine not rwhp. That way they have a bigger number.

yup, the Ford dyno's the engine (flywheel). I think Neal has some great numbers on how much power is actually lost through the drive train.

I checked a couple reviews for the F150's. They said that the '97 4.6 was rated at 210hp and the '98 was ar 220.

It would be really cool if there were someone (like maybe a tech) could give us a definitive answer. It really doesn't make a whole lot of difference, it's "only" 10hp. This has got me thinking though. I would like to know for sure what Ford says this engine is rated at.

this is what I found out???

I talked to a friend of mine who is a tech at a dealership that is near by and he said that the modular engine can actually increase in horsepower as they break in. So put that in your pipe and smoke on it for awhile and someone tell me if it is true!?!?!?

Ok now there's are good questions. Do the late model 98 have a different HP rating? And if it also has the FOU1 computer as mine dose, dose that mean that it would have even more HP? Just an interesting thought, although it would explain it's eagerness to pump off the line. As for what they told me it was rated, not to look like an idiot but I never asked them, the truck sold itself when I drove it. I know mine was a really late 98 as it was the last of 4 trucks they had left, and the 99's showed up the next week.

Mods - electric fans for sure. I have yet to get to them however I am planning on it.

for those fan, fabricate em, its super cheap >100 bucks and if you do a good job it comes out great. Much nicer than spending 350-400 bucks for an aftermarket one, check around ebay for the fans, the rest can be gotten at pepboys or the like
