Where is the cheapest place to get an electric fan for the 4.6? Thanks

 

Well, you probably should do a search on electric fans on this forum.

After reading the hundred or so threads, you can then begin to formulate your own criteria as to what will best fit your needs.

There are so many different fans available at so many different price points that your question is too generic to answer accurately.

You can look at the signatures in postings to see what people are using on their own rides.

For about $400, you can get a Flex-A-Lite dual electric fan kit that will mount perfectly in a later model F-150, but without knowing any specifics about your truck it is hard to say what would fit.

Post some details and I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses...

 

There are two kits available and one DIY using a fan from a MKVIII. Mike Troyer the Superchips Distributor sells a kit, see computer forums, and Flexalite makes a kit which you should be able to get from Summit Racing.

I found the Flex-a-Lite kit from www.truckperformance.com to be the least expensive place to buy and i think they may even be having a sale on it right now but am not positive about that. It is definatly less than Summit.

I have two 14-inch haydens that I got of Ebay new for $114 with shipping and purchased two Flexlite adjustable controllers for about $57 more. I am doing like this do to low funds and the challenge of it all. The fans came with their own 30 amp relays and I am going to wire each fan seperate for redundant systems incase one fails. I intend to set one fan for primary and a second fan for backup set at a slightily higher cut on. I don't hardily ever tow and have mostily flat country roads that we travel on so I feel this will be more than enough. If you tow, fourwheel drive or do alot of heavy hauling I think one of the bigger twin fan kits would be the way to go. Will be installing tomorrow and start my temperature testing for the thermostats. Glenn Taylor.

 

Since you are going with this setup and especially the way you are planning on running it I would HIGHLY SUGGEST that you spend a few extra dollars and get your self a very accurate Temp gauge to also go along with what you are doing so that you can keep a very close eye on your temp.The last thing you want is to run to hot. I don't know what truck engine you have but some of the trucks have a transmission cooler that also runs thru the radiator and if you run the truck to hot not only will you damage the engine but also your transmission..

Richard, I have the 4.2l, I was going to use the temperature setting that you can pull up with the trip odometer to set the fans. Of course its not that hot outside right now but was going to continue to pull it up as it gets hotter to make sure everything is ok. If I have any problems I will reinstalll the clutch fan until I could afford to get a bigger fan for one side or the other, thou I hope that is not necessary. Thanks, Glenn Taylor.

 

Set the first fan at 10* over the T Stat open temp of 192* = 202*
Set the second Fan at 10* higher and couple to the AC with a Relay, so when the AC turns on the second fan is on. so the on temp is 212*
Thread where we beat the turn on temp to death.
If you have a digital odometer, this is good enough to use for setting the temp. If not if you have a copy of AutoTap or Auto X-Ray this will also work ( from 96 on ). 95 and older, need the hand held temp gauge to be sure.

Thanks for the responses. I did do a search and apparently there are thousands of threads on e-fans as it timed out twice on me. Thanks for the info.

 

Instead of using an out of the box kit with a single fan/relay I would recommend dual 16" fans (derale about $119 ea and permacool about $90 ea) and 2x permacool relays with thermostats ($approx $49 ea). You get 2x fans and 2x relays so you have some redundancy in case one part fails and you can get it for less than many of the "kits" cost.

Exactly why I say to "do it yourself", get better redundancy as well as save $100.

 

HI!... I was 1ST one to run the DERALE 16" fans on my truck. I have had them on for over 4 years no. Never had a problem Each DERALE 16" fan cost me $98.00(U.S) and one PERMA-COOL thermo sensor cost me $45.00(U.S). Total cost was about $245.00(U.S). I did everything else myself. I run one fan off the thermo sensor and the other is wired to a manual switch in one of my gauge pods. I VERY rarely need to switch on the 2ND fan.

Neal can you put up the part #'s for those fans and all parets accosiated with them and do they push or pull air and then finally do you tow anything with your truck like a boat or camper and do you have A/C?
