Newbie needs help!
Hello...I recently bought my first"Truck". 1998 F150 X-Cab XLT with the 4.6 triton engine...60K Miles.
Here's my list of stupid questions..
I have no owners manual..The "dealer" has been no help, does anyone know where I could get one?
How do I set the stereo ? (really dumb question but I can't figure it out)
How big is my gas tank?
What are the SOP for switching to 4 High/4 low? Do I need to be in nuetral? I believe it's going in 4 High...but hear absolutley nothing but a small click.
I need to be in Nuetral to get it into 4L...even then I get quite a large bang clank when it goes in.
This is my first Ford. I'm loving it so far...but the little things are bugging me...wish I had a damn manual...

Hey man! Welcome to the f150 online community!
This might help with the 4WD....

As for the manual, try the parts department at the "stealership", they might be able to order one for you.
It's a stretch, but you could check ebay for it.
Good luck!

Thank you very much,
My truck too has no sticker on the visor (I looked). The shift is not on the floor either, it's a turn switch on the dash below the stereo (that I can't program)
The dealer has no parts dept...just sells vehicles...little support.

Welcome and sorry to hear about your bugs .... for the radio ... I will assume that you are having problems setting the clock and radio stations. To set a radio station as long as they haven't changed it from what I can remember. Turn it to the station that you want set. Once there and listening to it, push the desire number to which you wish to reference this radio station to. Hold it down until you see it blinking. Release the button and then it one more time. The blinking display should stop, select one on the other buttons then push the button you just set. The clock is basically the same way but I think you use the volume OR tuning control to change the time.
I don't know about the specs for the gas tank but we will need to know whether you have a short box or a long box first.
Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

Short Box.
Thanks for the help.
I ran it down until the Fuel Light came on last time and pumped almost 22 gals in. I'm going out on a ledge and assume there's got to be a couple morein there when that light comes on? Maybe?
How about the overdrive...some guys say I should run it all the time for better fuel economy? Is that right?
Thanks for the help.

You can get an original owner's manual at www.helminc.com as well as many other vehicle manuals.
If you have the 6.5' bed, you have a 25 gallon tank. 8' bed = 30 gallons.
The link has good information for engaging 4wd. I believe my owners manual says:
Above 32 degrees air temp, you cand go from 2wd to 4hi and back at speeds up to 55mph. Below, only 45mph. I try to keep it below 40mph all the time. I have heard stories of transfer cases exploding so I try to engage 4wd high as low of a speed as I can.
For 4wd low, you have to be going less than 2mph, and the transmission in neutral. Besides feeling the difference when it engages, there are two indicator lights on the dash, one for 4wd and another for 4x4 low.

I've had my truck for over for years and turned the overdrive off once when going through West Virginia.
You would normally operate with Overdrive On.
This is why Ford has the light 'backwards'.
They didn't want to bother you with a light.
When the OD is on, the light is off.
When the OD is off, the light is on.
If you see the 'light' Ford is saying:
"Hey pal, do you realize you are not using your OD. What's up with that?"

Did you say Cigars?!?!?! I love Cigars! What's up?
4x4 high while driving up to 55 is correct. However Do Not engage 4hi if your wheels are spinning (Like if you are stuck)
4lo must be stopped and in "N" and yes you will hear a loud "Clunk" that is normal. 4lo is mean on a 5.4 and in some conditions can over torque your brakes! (Your truck keeps going while you are standing on the brake pedal)
your fuel light should come on with just shy of 5 gallons left.
have fun with your new toy!!
