Poor man's intake

Hi, I am new to the site. I just got a 98 f-150 longbox with a 5.4 in it. I have been looking at the technical articles and was wondering if I could get some input from anyone who has tried hacking up their air box and replacing the tube from the MAF to the TB with an elbow made from exhaust pipe. On my old 93 ranger I hacked up the airbox and took out the air silencer and it sounded awesome. Not that I could notice much power with the little 2.3. So if anyone has some imput or maybe little things they did, I would love to hear it. thanks!

It's gonna be a PITA. You have the air temp sensor, The AIC and PCV tubes to deal with too.

You could replace the stock snorkle to fender well with a rubber plumbing connector adapter from home depot though.

You could take the factory intake setup, and cut off the end (right side) right after the little strap. Somewhere thier is a link or something to this little mod. I'll see if I can find some pics.

If you are referring to this one; http://www3.sympatico.ca/jmc.chartier/air1.html

Then I could help. I got the idea from Neal the HP freak. Mine is slightly different because I resued the rubber part between the tube and the Throttle body. The IAT sensor can be inserted in the rubber preeper between the MAF and the Tube. I chose to relocate mine to the fender opening. Did it improve power. Who knows. I didn't bother to get it tested on a dyno. It gave improved throttle response so I am happy. I cost me the price of the pipe and preeper. I already had the K&N filter.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I might just try cutting the airbox for now to expose more of the filter but leave the two little bottom cleats so that I can still fasten it down. maybe someday later when i have more time I can mess around with putting a mandrel elbow in there. If it wasn't for school and work, I would have all sorts of time to play around with, wouldn't that be nice!

JMC,

Have you ever though about putting a Accufab MAFS adapter plate on, and putting on a 12" long filter with the 4" diameter filter end ?

I got around to wroking the MAFS flow rates on the JLP air ram air box ( due to an article that Anderson Ford Motorsports wrote ) in the under 50 mph area, and found that the start up lbs/min rate on the JLP air ram air box where actually lower then the same config, less the air ram air box. ( was not my doing to find this, AFM was the one that prompted me to look at the lower end numbers ).

I am now to a K&N FIPK elbow and the Accufab MAFS adapter plate ( ~ 35.00 from Mike T. ) and the filter costs ( came with the JLP air Ram air box, so I cannot say what the exact costs were ).

I still have the hoses feeding the filter, less the box, and the inital numbers show the MAFS flow rate is within 1 bls/min on the top end and the lower end is almost 5 lbs/min better.

This might be a good add on to your FIPK mod, for those who don't want to do the drop in filter deal ( maybe ?? ).

Just some small thoughts on maybe adding to your mod, and keeping the MAFS flow rate up and the IAT down.

I am on kind of Ram Air version 1.9 at this point, and it is getting more affordable every step of the way ( if I use your method on the entry level FIPK ).

Just a thought, don't know if you looked at it or not.

Steve

Steve,

Yes I have looked at it. Or at least something like it. I mosy likely will not be going that route as I am looking at fabbing up a snorkle for when I imitate a submarine.
