Take a look on ebay. Occationally you'll find a wreck with a good engine. There was a 2001 Crown Vic police package with a good 4.6 at 42,000 miles that went for just over $700. I realize this won't fit your truck, it's just to give you an idea of how low you may get one.

I had to replace my 4.6 liter 97 f-150. My luck, this is one of the more expensive engines. rebuilt with 5 yr warranty runs about 2500 just for engine.
