Question Mineral spirits as injector cleaner?

Ever heard of adding mineral spirits (paint thinner) to the gas tank to clean fuel injectors?

Never heard of this. For as often as you need injector cleaner (once every 5 to 10 years) it's not worth the dollar you save by using paint thinner.

Nor have I heard of this. I'd just spend $5 or so on a can of seafoam at your local auto parts store. Techron is good too but I'm sure how much it runs a bottle.

I've tried them all

from the el cheapos to the most expensive. So far, it appears a gallon of mineral spirits works better. I wish I did only have to worry about fuel injector cleaners every 5 - 10 years. Actually, I didn't have to worry with them period until I got this 5.4L.

You've actually put mineral spirits in the gas tank? I've actuall never heard of that.

When I asked about injector cleaner once I was told the new injectors on vehicles have a coating that can actually be damage by injector cleaners and cause them to get clogged up faster or something. Is there any truth to that?

How often should one run injector cleaner in their trucks? I've only got 29.5K miles on the truck. Would it be worth running some through it?

Intel,

Could your source have been talking about the Throttle Body? Never heard of not being recommended to clean injectors.

be careful the mineral spirits might dissolve everything in your fuel filter including the filter media.

besides with modern gas which has loads of detergents in it most modern fuel injector cleaners are mostly for carbon removal. Mineral spirits are great varnish removers which old cold carburetors were famous for.

I would say use at your own risk and possibly lack of warranty coverage.

Cool mineral sprits

MANY people are fooled by advertising and I know from decades of use that STP is nothing more than mineral spirits! People have been getting ripped off for decades, and all I do is buy this by the gallon and use 5oz. on a regular basis. Not every fill up but at least monthly. NO it does NOT eat away the filter media unless it's foam rubber!

Yes and it does a very good job and has done so for over 30 years. Just add 5-10 oz. once a month to a fill-up!

You know that this thread hadn't been posted to for 12 YEARS till you hopped in?

The only chemical I will put in MY tank other than gasoline is Techron. Once a year.
