Autotap w/Palm......
I know there are a few of you using Autotap. Anyone using a Palm as apposed to a lap top?
I want to be able to monitor what my truck is doing every time I drive it. I was figuring that I could place the Palm in an area where I could see it with out being a distracted.
You people using Autotap, are you able to get readings from all the sensors in real time. I would like to display actual RPM, actual MPH and measure IAT, A/F ratios, fuel rail pressure, ect. Anyone got any advice on what else I might want to be monitoring?
I guess I would like to know if the poeple using Autotap think that it will do what I want it to. It sounds like it should. I need some assurence.
Thanks!

wittom,
I use it on a laptop, so I can get the gauges on the screen big enough to read, where the palm might be a little small to read that maybe entries.
Also I don't know how much you can long on the plam, the laptop is limited by drive space only ( few 10 gig here and there
).
The rev 2.0 hardware and software will do the things you are talking about, but remember that the A/F is on a narrow band lamba sensor and readings, not a wide band like a Dyno. The further away from 14.7:1 it is, the less accurate it is. I notice some huge fluxations in my A/F gauge, depending on how I am driving.
Just some thoughts, maybe the palm display is not a problem for you to see, I just wanted to be able to glance and see what was up with it, while taking logs.

Thanks SSCULLY, I know that you have posted about your experiance with Autotap and was hoping you would see my thread.
On the Autotap site they show the Palm screens. It looks as though I could monitor ten or twelve peramiters at once and have them displayed in a text format. The Palm m130 seems like it should do a good job of displaying the info. screen shots from Autotap/Palm
That would work for me. I was thinking that I would just leave the set up in the truck and when ever I drove I would turn it on. Would I have to use memory if I didn't need to save the info?
I would like to have a lap top but right now I can't fit into the budget. I'm hoping that this set up will provide enough info to help to have a proper tune and to avert catostrophic failure.
If there is an alternative for similar money I might consider that. I want something that will work and am patient enough to wait till I've heard more info.

wittom,
Those screens don't look too bad to view, so I guess it comes down to where you mount it for the glance at a row. The gauge setup looks pretty good, I just remember when I use to use my Palm V, I hated that damn thing, trying to read it in the sun light.
The newer ones are probably much better at this now.
The memory is only for the log for play back, so during the view only, it should be no worry.
If you drop Chi Diver an email in his profile, he has Auto X-Ray, you can ask him how he likes it, I don't know if he has the PC or handheld version.
It is another option to look at, myself I have never used it.
I cannot think of anyone using the Palm version of AutoTap.
EasterIsand or Don ( forget which right now ) use the AutoTap on a laptop, unless they have changed as of late.
Good luck picking out something.

are these tools for monitoring only? Is there not something out ther you can use for adjusting the engien and transmission with. I know there is a superchip pro programmer but it costs as much as one of these monitors. It would sure be nice to monitor and program with the same unit. I know there are issues that messing with engine fuel mixtures and timimng that may void warranties. But user beware and whoever decides to try changing engine functions better know wht they are doing before they attemp this
xcr600,
AutoTap is for montiroing items via the ODB II port( www.autotap.com ) also reading and clearing DTC codes. You cannot program any setting with it.
The SuperChip MicroTuner is a chip and DTC reader put into a single unit, the addition of the DTC reader is why this is ~ 100.00 more then a chip that is mounted on the PCM ( along with you don't need to be concerned with cleaning the contacts on the PCM ).
It is jst another tool for reading items from the PCM, and clearing and getting DTCs.
Nothing else. I don't even know if a WDS or NGS could so programming changes line by line ( i.e. trans shift points ), but it can reflash the PCM with the stock Ford Code. ( and these are 1000.00 + units to start out with ), along with other items ( turning on the wipers via the PCM, to see if a wiper problem is the multifunction switch or the wiper motor for an example ).
danny owens,
The cable came with the AutoTap software ( the ODBII connetor to the converter to the serial port is what is the money maker
).
