Question Regular vs Synthetic Oil

I have been using the Motorcraft 5W30 that Ford says to use but was wondering if synthetic is better. Does the type of oil really matter?

Synthetic is better. The real question's are do you needit? Do you want it? Are you willing to pay for it? Will you really benefit from it?

I use Mobil 1. I like it. I make mostly short trips. My drive to work is 3.5 miles. That's grueling. Really. I don't see any difference in gas mileage. But it did alleviate some cold weather starting noise (grinding). Mostly it just makes me feel good because I feel I own a great truck and the cost of the changing Mobil 1, 2 times a year is about 50 bucks. Conventional oil would cost me about $$16 bucks a year. For a $34 differential, you bet I use Mobil 1.

This has been hashed through plenty. You could spend countless nights reqding the old threads, just use the search function.

About how much more is synthetic? I pay around 1.50 at wal-mart for the motorcraft oil. Would I have to use a different oil filter than the motorcraft? I also have a grinding noise too.

Mobile 1 can be bought for around $4 a qrt. It lasts at least 5,000 mi. or/ 6 months. Motorcraft filters are synthetic compatable. My father runs Mobile 1 10W-30 and a Motorcraft FL-820S. I run Redline 5W-30 and an FL-820S.

If you intend to go much beyond 3k on oil change, I would suggest the synthetic. I use Royal Purple 5W30 and change at 5 - 6k depending on how much highway driving I have done. I have been using Mobil 1 filters but intend to change to Motorcraft next change because of what I have read on this and another board. I feel the synthetic gives much better protection on startup. For a lot more info on oil and filter try www.bobistheoilguy.com.

Thanks a lot guys! Anybody know anything about any detrimental effects of changing over to synthetic or any precautions to take?

There aren't any detrimental effects caused by synthetic oils. The only thing I could forsee hapening is that a change to synthetics could exscaserbate (sp.?) a pre-existing oil leak.

If you want a long relationship with your vehicle, both synthetics and dino oil are wonderful as long as you change them on a regular basis. The reaason I switched to synthetic is because i want that extra piece of mind and I do a lot of city driving.

sorry, my spelling is horrible.
