Question Cold Start Problems...hardly starts.

2001 with 30,000 mi. When I start up after about an hour of sitting, and it's under about 30 degrees, it will just BARELY start, and when it does, it chunks along at like 200 RPM's if that, for about 10 secs. until I floor it. My 99' was a hard starter too, but not like this. WTF is it?

It could be a sensor. Either the intake air temp. sensor, or maybe the engine coolant temp. sensor. Also, do you show any trouble codes on the scanner? If you have any codes, it will be very simple to find out which unit is faulty? Just a guess though. Keep me informed.

I'd recommend checking your coolant mixture. You may be running to much water in it.

Change the Intake Air Control valve. I had the same problem and changed mine this weekend. Runs perfect now. Very easy change. Valve costs $70-$80 at Ford Dealer. I've heard you can get it online for $45 but I was unable to locate it.

Clean the IAC. It is cheaper than replacing it.

I had the same problem in my 98 4.6 with 97k miles. The problem was actually the battery! It was still the stock battery, but when it got really cold, it couldnt pump out enough power for the starter.

Before you buy a new battery, try attaching a jumper box or jumper cables to the battery in the morning before you try to start it. If the problem is your battery, then it will fire up just fine. I upgraded to a Champion 1000crank amp, 850 cold crank amp battery, and it starts up every time with no problems like it used to have.

This is no guess, i had the SAME problem!
